One if By Land, Two if By Sea, near the Village, is a great restaurant. Considered one of the most romantic in the country, it also has an amazing Beef Wellington, and possibly the best Chocolate Souffle I've ever had.

Another option for steak, though I haven't been there yet, is Spark's Steak House, which seems almost universally to get rave reviews. People love Peter Luger's in Brooklyn (some call it the best steak house in the U.S.), but when we went, the steak tasted spoiled to me. However, the onion rolls and the strudel with shlag were great.

You can also get those amazing onion rolls at Tavern on the Green in Central Park, or at the restaurant at the Plaza Hotel. Or you can buy the onion rolls retail at Zabar's

There have been half price tickets for this a lot lately...

        It's been a while

but if I recall correctly Gotham is more of a seafood restaurant...still there but I haven't been in years.

Are you looking for a particular area of the city to dine in?

Atlantic Grill on E77 Street is excellent.
Aquavit on Spring street in Soho is also very good.
Smith & Wollensky's remains a fave for steaks and their extensive seafood menu on E49th & Third Ave.

and of course you could always go to the water club but I personally like it's sister better, River Cafe under the Brooklyn Bridge on the Brooklyn side so you look at Manhattan's skyline.

Yep, one of my long time favorites. I agree completely, even with the food choices....

I also like Lawren's suggestion of the River Cafe in Brooklyn.....It is a really special restaurant. They also have a great Sunday brunch, which is a slightly more affordable....There are also some fun stores over there, and, you can even walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, if your into that sort of thing....

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

If you want a really great view of the city and eat at a nice place that won't leave you with empty pockets try Giandos on the water in Brooklyn.

Also remember to go to the Empire State building at night is best.

We have a first-time NYC visitor with us, who wanted to see the Empire State Building. I convinced her that we should do it at night. I couldn't talk her out of the ferry to Liberty Island (I tried to suggest just doing the Staten Island Ferry, but she wants to go onto the island), but that's OK, since I've never been to Ellis Island, and this is an excuse for me to finally get there.

                Angela--

I have lots of food choices in NYC for lots of different occasions. Have you ever been to the Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery on the lower east side? Great "comfort food" baked goods. But their Lemon Cupcakes are absolutely the best I've ever had.

I will usually make a "food run" to the lower east side to stock the room for a week that includes a stop at Gus' Pickles (Pickles, Sauerkraut, Marinated Artichokes/Mushrooms), Yonah Schimmel's Knishes (Knishes and Noodle Kugel), Katz's Deli (Pastrami -- and my mom likes their french fries), Russ & Daughters (fish of various types), the Doughnut Plant (anything) and the Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery (lemon cupcakes).

Yup, I seem to be getting all of the places down. . . .

No, I have never been to Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery. I will have to give it a try one day. I will also mention it to friends living in that area, just in case they have missed it.

Sounds like you have the food part of your trip covered. You're like me, the first thing I want to know about a place I'm visiting, is where to eat. Eating well, really puts the icing on the cake, when on vacation......

Your gonna have a great time, I'm getting excited for you.......

                    Just so you guys know.
This thread has so many restaurants that I think we should take them out and have a Restaurant Folder for this area as a sticky. Moderator's of this forum you can start by taking all the restaurant links here and starting a new thread called NY Restaurants. If possible note the location. I am not sure if it is needed and I am not sure if Ken can make a Restaurant Data base but I will run it by him.
Moderators look for a note coming soon to make a Restaurant list for your areas.

                      Good idea Frank!

( especially since I won't have to do them for my boards )

I have so many favorites in New York that the tough part is deciding where not to eat. For example, I love the Cuban food at Cabana, near Bloomie's, and the Hot Fudge/Peanut Butter Fudge Sundae at Serendipity 3. My mom would like to try Jekyll & Hyde's (for the experience, not the food). I definitely need a Corned Beef sandwich from Carnegie, and a Pastrami sandwich from Katz's. Yet, we will probably have to pass up the Blintzes at Stage Deli, despite the fact that they're great. And, we suspect that we will only be able to have one pizza. Is it Ray's, John's or Grimaldi's?

One friend insists on eating once at White Castle (which makes the rest of us gag), but it's near Penn Station, so we can go to Nathan's there (unfortunately missing the one on Coney Island). But, if we do Nathan's, then don't we have to skip Gray's Papaya? If our friend drags us to White Castle, then we have to skip the Burger place in the Parker Meridien.

At least my bagel choice is easy: H&H. But it is a long way from the Affinia Dumont, and will involve two subway transfers. For steak, is it really Spark's, or do we choose Shula's, Bobby Van's, Gallagher's, or Del Frisco's?

Italian: do we do Zigolini's, Carmine's, Patsy's, Cucina di Pesce, La Villa, or somewhere else?

I wouldn't mind having some Spanish food/Tapas, but I doubt that my party will be up for it, not knowing what Spanish food is. That said, I've heard amazing things about Sala One-Nine.

I know about Amy Ruth's for Soul Food, but we'll probably have to pass on the fledgling BBQ industry in NYC.

So, yes, I know some great places to eat, but I definitely don't have the food "covered" yet.

BTW, surprisingly, Sam Ash Deli, just across Seventh Ave. from the Manhattan Club, has great Rugalah, though most of their other food is kind of touristy and not great.

You know I've got a great list for New Orleans, but I haven't been back there since the hurricane, and I don't know what's open, what's permanently closed, and what was destroyed. My guess is that I won't be back to NOLA until next year.

Edit: OK, I posted an embryonic version on my board.

hahaha.... One thing about NYC is that there can actually be too many choices. We live in NY and go through the same routine many times.

One way to go about choosing a restaurant, is by location. Once you have your 'must do' aside, maybe the others can be chosen based on your schedule and the location of your other choices. Go to the ones most convenient for your other plans.

And, whatever you decide, don't take two subways for bagels. There are great bagel places all over NY. There must be a place close to the Dumont that someone can suggest.

Wherever you wind up eating, I'm sure it will be great. With a list like yours, you won't go wrong....well, besides White Castle........

I'm open to suggestions. But I don't want just a good bagel place -- we have those here in California. I want a spectacular bagel place. I've tried many bagel places in New York, and so far, only H&H has fit the bill.
