  • Need some recommendations for New York City

I haven't been to the Big Apple in a while. I'm heading there for the US Tennis Open at the end of August.

All I want to do is eat, run and watch tennis all week. Maybe catch a couple musicals or plays.

I'm not up to speed anymore on the best restaurants, I'd appreciate your recommendations for the following "best of New York" restaurant types:

    1) Pastrami and/or Corned Beef. Miss it dearly. Gotta have the best.
    2) Fancy Steak Restaurant. Gotta have a New York Steak in New York.
    3) Best Indian Food. Miss it dearly. Gotta have some Chicken Vindaloo that will melt my boots with fluffy naan bread. Even a vegetarian buffet would be fine.
    4) Pizza. I might just go to Penn Station to get it. But, I'd like your vote. Pizza sucks in most places I go. Gotta hit Lombardi's.
    5) Italian Food. I need some out of this world red sauce and antipasto. anything else that goes with it is a bonus.
    6) Cheesecake. Anyone make it better than Carnegie Deli?

Also, what are the best musicals / plays running right now. Gotta get my theatre itch scratched.

    Thanks!

P.S. Is it safe to run in Central Park?

If you can get tickets to Jersey Boys, you must see it. You will not regret it.

Katz's for Pastrami. Carnegie Deli for Corned Beef.

Spark's is an experience, as well as a fantastic steak (but very expensive). Peter Luger's in Brooklyn has a reputation, but their steak was spoiled when I ate there.

Can't help you there. Have not found spectacular Indian Food in NYC yet.

I've gotta go with Frank on this one.

Frank recommended Rao's a couple of years ago for their meatballs. That was an absolute hit. Great food, cute restaurant.

            Lawren,

West Side Story is playing on Broadway now? OMG. That is my favorite musical of all time. It never ran when I lived in NJ. That is something I am definitely going to do.

The best pizza is actually at Sal's in Mamaroneck, New York...about a 45 minute train ride from the city but walkable from the station. The line is always out the door. Unfortunately, there's not much else to do in Mamaroneck....

I'm not a big fan of Kobe beef. I think it's too wimpy for me. I've never been impressed with that Japanese innovation.

I have always wanted to go to Peter Luger's. It's famous. But, is it over rated?

I will try to help with Indian.

Tabla and Tamarind are the highest rated by Zagat. Very spendy for Indian. Dawat is also upscale, used to be #1. I ate there last year and it was great.

My favorite "closer to earth" indian is Curry Leaf at Lexington and 27th.

For a real NY experience, there are cheap indian places all over East 6th street between 1st and 2nd avenues, some with live Sitar music. The food is not extraordinary at any of them, but the price is right.

Curry in a Hurry is also very popular.

Tabla has a $25 prix fixe lunch, I think. Definitely spendy for Indian, but it's supposed to be very pretty, with good food.

I worked near 27th and Lexington a few years back and most of the Indian restaurants in that neighborhood are quite good. If you're going to Queens anyway for Frank's places, Jackson Heights is the epicenter of Indian culture in the boroughs--there must be some great places out there.

Meanwhile, for steak, the New York Times likes Minetta Tavern. I remember a rave review in the paper a few months back, saying it was the best steakhouse in town.

Good to know about Tabla lunch! Fwiw, the easiest day for a table at Minetta is Sunday, if you want to eat at a reasonable hour. Tues-Thurs are near impossible in the summer, and book up 30 days ahead. I've yet to manage to hit it right.
