  • NY implements .05 deposit on water bottles

yet another thing to bring back with me to the store or I'll go broke. I go through several cases of Poland Spring each month!!! It's all about the 80% to the state of unclaimed deposit returns.

NY Bottle Deposit for ‘water drinks’ Starts On Halloween

    h cases

Bottle Deposit Starts On Halloween: Starting this coming Saturday, bottled water drinks will be subject to a nickel deposit—and the NY State government will be able to collect millions from the unclaimed deposits. Governor Paterson said, “The expansion of this legislation not only provides our State with much-needed revenue, but will also help us to keep our neighborhoods and parks clean.”

The law was supposed to go into effect in June, but some bottlers had argued that it was going into effect too soon, especially since NY State requires bottles sold here to have a special UPC. Which means some distribution and logistical issues; Environmental Leader points out, "For instance, a distributor can’t simply restock New York shelves with product from a New Jersey warehouse unless it bears the unique code."

The Post-Standard explains, “For consumers, the change is simple enough. Beginning at 12 a.m. Saturday, they will pay a nickel deposit on bottles of water, just as they do for soda and beer. They will get the deposits back when they return the bottles to the store or to a redemption center. Deposits will not be required on water that has sugar added, or on containers of 1 gallon or more.”

Distributors will have to give NY State 80% of all unclaimed deposits.

I thought that, technically, the deposit started 1 Nov.

I suggest you do what we've done: get a Brita filter for the water tap in the kitchen, and a couple of Kleen Kanteens or Sigg water bottles to carry. It saves a ton of money. Why use all the extra petroleum to make those bottles in the first place, and the energy to cart them to the store and your house?

    Regards,

It's a gold mine for the poor souls that pick the garbage for bottles and cans.

Yes it did but I wasn't paying attention and got zapped with the deposit today.

Because I'm a spoiled NYC brat of 35 years and the water is just AWFUL up here, even with a Britta. It shouldn't be but it is.

I have a reverse osmosis system for my home. The tank is in the basement, not under the sink so it is out of the way that limited space. The RO tap is at the sink. That water is more pure than the drip filtration systems and very inexpensive compared to bottled water.

Like the bottles? Rinse the ones you have and refill with the RO tap or use one of the many good reuseable water bottles.

My tap water tastes pretty good, and I drink it at home, straight up, not even from the Brita pitcher. However, if I put it in a bottle and bring it with me it doesn't taste good after it's been out awhile. So I generally travel with water bottles from the store.

From what I've seen when I've been out walking with the respect to the large numbers of empty water bottles and small numbers of pop and beer cans lying along side the road, the 5 cent NY deposit on pop and beer cans has been a good thing.

Even if the state ends up with a big chunk of the deposit money, if a deposit on water bottles reduces, by whatever means, the trash thrown out on our roads, so much the better.

I just hope the new deposit also applies to iced tea bottles and energy drinks.

I never bring back any bottles. We have older ladies in the neighborhood who come around and check our garbage bags on recycling day. I put the ones with the nickel deposit in another bag and they just take the bag. They need the money more than me and someone gets to profit other than the state.
