Time to hit the slopes ... on your mountain bike

The snow is mostly gone from Utah ski resorts, and it's time to think about riding something other than skis and snowboards down the mountain.
The lifts may not move as many folks now as they do when Utah's precious powder is deep, but mountain biking continues to grow in popularity, as is evident by the advent of a mountain-bike terrain park at Wolf Mountain this summer.
Most resorts offer free riding, but charge a fee for the lift.
Here's a look at the resorts that offer lift-served mountain biking in the summer and fall, with the dirt on each.

      Brian Head Resort
The lone operating resort in southern Utah.

      * BRIAN HEAD offers 200 miles of single track with seven trails accessed from the Giant Steps chair lift, which is open Friday to Sunday.
      * THE RESORT is in the process of adding one new trail. Lift and shuttle service begins Saturday and runs through Sept. 30.
      * THE VIEWS, including some from 11,307 feet, are as breathtaking as the riding. Lift prices are $8 for one trip or $20 for an all-day ticket. Shuttles are $17.50 per trip. Rentals are available starting at $35.

Alpine Golf new at Canyons for 2007

If the helicopter is not your thing, the gondola ride that starts at Red Pine Lodge may satisfy those who crave high-elevation scenery. Those who show their Park City business card can ride it for free all season Thursday through Friday. The Red Pine Cafรƒยฉ is located at the top of the gondola and guests who purchased a gondola pass will receive 15 percent off on food and non-alcoholic drinks.
Gondola riders will be taken to their destination at 8,000 feet. There they can access hiking or biking trails. 2006/07 season passes can be used for the gondola and riders can bring almost anything with them.
"The only thing they can't take are their dogs," Dowd said.
Dowd said the mountain is full of wildlife and scenery that hikers and bikers can see on their way down the hill.
"The mountain bikers and the hikers always see the wildlife," Dowd said.
Dowd said there are a lot of advanced biking trails and the family-friendly trails are located near to Red Pine Lodge.
Trailheads can also be found at the base area and maps are available at Canyon Mountain Sports in the Resort Village or can be downloaded from the Web site at The Canyons :: The Canyons Resort in Park City, UT- Utah's largest ski and snowboard resort.

Alpine Disc Golf is a new activity this summer at the resort. It is a nine-hole course located mid-mountain just close to Red Pine Lodge. Public access to the course is free with the purchase of a daily gondola pass. Canyon Mountain Sports has a course map/scorecard and other rental equipment.
The course was launched at the end of last summer, Dowd said, but it was only open a couple weeks before the resort closed.
"I technically look at this as the first year, it looks fun as anything," Dowd said.
The summer concert series and the Farmer's Market will continue to be staples at the resort this year, Dowd said.
"Park City might be lost without Saturday concerts as well as Farmers Markets," Dowd said. "The concerts series is our fitting institution at this point. It's a lot of fun."
The summer concerts at The Canyons, Dowd said, are geared toward families.
"I tend to think that summer concerts on the Saturdays are family friendly, they get done early enough to get kids home and in bed on time," Dowd said.
The resort is offering a package at the Sundial Lodge during the concert series. The package costs just under $1,000, according to Dowd and includes two nights, free underground parking next to the concert venue, VIP credentials, group gondola passes to go to Red Pine on Friday though Sunday, several platters of hors d'oeuvres and a stocked bar.
Summers are becoming a top priority for the resorts almost equaling the winter.
"Every year we see more people," Dowd said. "It's only getting more amped up."

        The Canyon's Summer Schedule:

The Flight of The Canyons Gondola will open June 21, and runs Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Canyon Mountain Sports in the Resort Village. Nine of Utah's 13 ski areas offer a full schedule of summer activities, ranging from hiking to biking to a high-speed coaster ride down mountain slopes.

The resort was one of the first to offer lift-served mountain biking. Riders have access to more than 200 miles of single and double track trails and a variety of options, including trails on the ski slopes or extended rides, mostly all downhill, where a shuttle picks up and returns riders. The resort also offers scenic chair rides.
The resort also offers Utah's highest (11,000 feet) and longest (10,000 feet) Frisbee golf course in Utah.

Among the activities available at The Canyons are gondola rides, hiking, biking and new this year is disc golf. The Gondola rides are available Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Hikers and bikers can take the gondola up and then choose the route of their descent, mostly all downhill. Or they can explore the mountain and take the ride down later.
New this year is a nine-hole disc golf course designed into the mountain setting. The course starts where the gondola ends. There is no charge to play, but a ticket up the gondola is required.

Among the many things Deer Valley is noted for, none stands out like its summer mountain bike program. The resort was one of the first in the country to offer lift-served access to the high ground, and lifted the program up from there. One magazine listed the resort as one of the top 10 biker destinations in the country.
Bikers and scenic riders have access to two lifts — Silver Lake Express at the base and the Sterling Express located midmountain. From there riders have access to 55 miles of mountain riding on both single and double track.
The resort has also set aside a number of hiking-only trails. There is a short quarter-mile hike, with very little elevation change, that offers views of Jordanelle Reservoir and the Uinta Mountains. There is a longer five-mile hike, Sultan Out & Back, that offers easy descents and moderate ascents, that starts at the Silver Lake Lodge.
The resort also offers a number of summer adventure camps for kids.

          Bungie at the Bird.

The newest ride is the Alpine Coaster, one of only three in the country. This elevated ride consists of more than a mile of loops and high-speed curves.
At 3,000 feet, the resort's slide is one of the longest in the world. There are four different tracks, each winding and turning and dipping mid-mountain to the base.
There are four different cables for the ZipRider that carries riders, at times, up to 110 feet off the ground at speeds approaching 45 miles per hour.
There are also a number of rides open to keep the kids entertained.
There are two lifts open to bikers, hikers and scenic riders — the Town Lifts that begins on the town's Main Street and the PayDay lift located at the base of the resort.

Disc golf, lift-served mountain biking and hiking through stands of trees and open meadows are among the options available.
The mountain biking trails are considered among some of the most enjoyable and scenic in the state. There are 25 miles of trails on ski-area property, and more trails running off the property that are controlled by the U.S. Forest Service.
Snowbasin was one of the first in the state to offer a course to disc golfer. The course is one of the longest in the state with three holes rated par 3, 10 rated par 4 and five rated long par 5.

Snowbird is among Utah's most popular summer sites, not only because of the available activities, but also for its fall Octoberfest.
Among the summer challenges are the two-lane alpine slide, two-line ZipRider, mechanical bull, hiking and biking, horseback riding, ATV rides, bungee jump, inflatable activities for kids and the popular Tram ride.
What has blended many of these things together is the 'Bird's Activities Pass. The pass allows visitors unlimited access for the day to the various events.
New this summer is the ride on the new Peruvian chair that stops at the entrance to the Snowbird tunnel. Riders can either get off the lifts and go through the tunnel and then ride down, or stay on the chair and enjoy the scenic ride down.
The area's slide is 1,300 feet long and the ZipRider is 1,000 feet long. The Tram has been a popular summer activity since it was first opened in 1971. The Tram rises nearly 3,000 feet along a 1.60-mile-long cable. Riders can go the top of the 11,000 -foot Hidden Peak and either mill around and enjoy the lofty view or hike down to the base.
Horseback and ATV trips start at the top of Hidden Peak and ascent down in to Mineral Basin. Those going on horseback are driven down to the base of the Basin; those taking ATV rides start from the peak and follow access roads.

Solitude offers visitors the opportunity to ride, hike or throw in the summer.
Mountain biking and/or scootering has become very popular. Mountain biking is a signature activity. It offers 20 miles of forested single-track trails. Visitors can take the Sunrise lift, which rises up nearly 1,000 vertical feet from the Solitude Village, and choose to stay on and ride back down or get off and explore or hike down.
For those looking for a different ride down, the resort offers modified scooters called a Diggler, a cross between a kid's scooter and mountain bike.
Hikers and bikers are able to access two canyons off the chair — Solitude and Honeycomb — that feature some unique geological features and remnants of early mining days.
Consensus is that the resort's disc golf course is one of the most scenic in the state. All "holes" are par 3. The entire 18-hole course is 7,750 yards. The Sunrise lift takes discers to the course Wednesday through Sunday.

              Geocaching.............the newest outdoor hobby

Geocaching 101 and Geacaching Trail Ride

Park City's Mountain Trails Foundation is offering outdoor enthusiasts an opportunity to learn more about one of the fastest growing outdoor hobbies, Geocaching. Mountain Trails will host a free introductory clinic on Wednesday, Aug. 1 plus a Geocaching trail ride on Saturday, Aug. 4.

Geocaching is a modern day treasure hunt utilizing a GPS receiver plus subtle hints to find hidden 'caches' at interesting outdoor locations. Park City is a hotbed for hidden caches, with dozens located along Mountain Trails' several hundred miles of bike and hiking trails in Park City.

Mountain Trails' clinics will be conducted by local Geocaching experts Tom Kelly and Carole Duh (Tumbleweed and Cactus) with nearly 400 caches found.

"Geocaching has really enhanced our travel and especially our outdoor recreation by taking us to interesting places we would never have known," said Kelly. "And for newcomers to the hobby there's no better place to begin than the trails around Park City."

The introductory clinic will be 7:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1 at the Park City Miner's Hospital. The mountain bike trail ride will meet at the Starbucks at Kimball's Junction and run from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 utilizing only the flat trails in the valley, so it's perfect for any level rider.

The Wednesday clinic will include a short introduction to Geocaching and use of a GPS receiver. The trail ride will be a hands-on opportunity to find actual caches along the Park City trails. The introductory clinic is not required and enthusiasts are welcome to attend either or both of the free clinics.

Participants are encouraged to spend some time at Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site to learn more and to register for a free Geocaching login. It's also recommended you have a GPS receiver. And a mountain bike or cruiser bike is required for the trail ride. The Geocaching trail ride will be designed for beginning riders.

"GPS receivers are really handy for outdoor trail riding or hiking," said Kelly. "For newcomers, I recommend Garmin's eTrex line, especially the new Garmin eTrex Legend Cx. Magellan's Explorist line is also very good." GPS receivers are readily available at outdoor stores, including REI in Salt Lake City which offers the best line and expertise.

More introductory information on Geocaching is available at Tumbleweed and Cactus ยป Home. No advance registration is required for the free clinics.
