If the Sundance Film Festival is about seeing stars, the Sundance Institute's Outdoor Film Festival is about enjoying movies under the stars.
Sundance's outdoor screenings begin Friday at the City Park in Park City, with Peter Yates' 1979 coming-of-age tale "Breaking Away." The movie - selected by one of the Sundance Film Festival's programmers - screens July 9 at the Gallivan Center in downtown Salt Lake City and July 11 at the Eccles Stage of the Sundance resort in Provo Canyon.
The shows start at sundown, usually around 9 p.m., and are free to the public. Screenings continue Friday nights in Park City, Mondays at the Gallivan and Wednesdays at Sundance through Aug. 22.
Here are the other films playing in the festival:
* "The Truman Show" (1998), starring Jim Carrey as a man who learns his life is a reality show - July 13 in Park City, July 16 in Salt Lake City, July 18 at the Sundance resort.
* "Kinky Boots" (2005), about a struggling British shoe factory that finds a fabulous route to success - July 20 in Park City, July 23 in Salt Lake City, July 25 at the Sundance resort.
* "Never Cry Wolf" (1983), about a wildlife researcher (Charles Martin Smith) getting close to Alaskan wolves - July 27 in Park City, July 30 in Salt Lake City, Aug. 1 at the Sundance resort.
"Stop Making Sense" (1984), Jonathan Demme's landmark concert film of the Talking Heads - Aug. 3 in Park City, Aug. 6 in Salt Lake City, Aug. 8 at the Sundance resort.
* "Ocean's Eleven" (1960), the original Vegas heist, starring Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack - Aug. 10 in Park City, Aug. 13 in Salt Lake City, Aug. 15 at the Sundance resort.
* "Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" (1964), Stanley Kubrick's classic Cold War satire, starring Peter Sellers and George C. Scott; chosen for this festival by director Michael Lehmann ("Heathers"), a frequent Sundance lab adviser - July 13 in Park City, July 16 in Salt Lake City, July 18 at the Sundance resort.
