  • Greetings from Big Sky, Montana

We are vacationing in Big Sky, Montana. I have learned a lot about the area. The resort and ski area was started by Chet Huntley (of Huntley and Brinkley news) back in the early ‘70s. There are several resorts on this part of the mountain. The one we are at is Lake Condominiums.

The scenery is beautiful. The mountains are so high, snow capped and amazing. Gas is almost as high as the mountains, $4.33 by Yellowstone, $4.19 at Big Sky. For the most part, gas is over $4.00 in Montana, about $3.9X in South Dakota but NOTE-Mid range prices are often lower than regular. I found mid range gas for $3.82 while the reg. was 3.88.

We left Rapid City about 6:30 Sunday morning and drove with only a few stops and I picked a road that had nothing to stop for...gas, food, sights. If anyone else wants to drive from Rapid City SD to Big Sky MT, stay on I-90, don't go the shorter 212 route. We did see Little Big Horn. Between the (very pretty ) Ranger lady who spoke passionately about her Crow history, and the DW who is a history teacher, I got an earful of what happened, more then I needed to know.

The resort area is big for winter and ski season, and is trying to get full year, but they have a bit more to go for that. We got into the resort area about 5:30, tired and hungry. Try to find something to eat on a summer night in a ski area that shuts down for the summer We finally found a bar, and got food from the bar.

We have plans for Yellowstone on Tuesday and Friday, Virginia City, MT on Thursday (and our 9 year annv. celebration dinner ), and white water rafting (half day) on Wednesday.

Due to the long drive, we will have to cut our stay at the resort short, leaving on Saturday, stay overnight in Bismarck, ND, then back to Minneapolis on Sunday.

I have taken pictures of the unit, and the area, and hope to provide a review once I get back.

    Don,

Sorry to hear about the poor choice of road, and the gas prices, but the scenery sure sounds spectacular.

Enjoy Yellowstone, and be sure to take lots of pics.

Happy Anniversary to you , and your wife. Enjoy your special dinner.

BTW, I pay $4.30 or higher a gallon, every day.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

We did the 212 highway from Devils Tower to Red Lodge MT. I was glad the speed limit was 75 mpg. We did see a lot of mule deer along the highway. There was road construction where the work crews used a pilot vehicle to escort vehicle though the construction which caused about a 30 min delay. I have never seen that before.

It was nice but I would do the back tracking to get to I-90 also.

Have lots of fun. Isn't it beautiful out there? If you need a good breakfast place, at the foot of the mountain and at the main road there is a service station that has really good breakfast. Another place we enjoyed eating was Cinnamon Lodge...it's on the left hand side of the road on the way to West Yellowstone.

                    Don,

We are staying at the WorldMark in West Yellowstone. We are about 1/4 mile from the West entrance to Yellowstone. Let me know when you will be in this area and maybe we can go out for a drink.

Wow, Yellowstone was fabulous. Frank, if you read this, I think we need a sticky for Yellowstone. There have been a lot of questions on what to see, time or miles from XX to YY, what will I see and where, etc.

That being said, we saw a lot, did a lot and had fun. We got in about 9am, left about 5:30pm and still had to cut short some of our adventures. Note to anyone going to Yellowstone this year, one of the trails (Artists Point Hot Pots) had been closed because of an accident with a hiker. Did you know the hot pots can move? I didn’t. More inspections have to be done before they can open the section, and it may not be this summer. The Grand Prismatic Spring was unbelievably beautiful. We did so much, and only did the lower loop. We will do the upper loop on Friday and will catch the waterfalls that we missed on Tuesday.

Wednesday, we went rafting. We did the Class 2 and Class 3 rapids. This is soooo coool. If I was a few years younger (and had a more adventurous wife) we could have done the mad mile. That was an aggressive ride with lots of Class 4 rapids. I brought the waterproof camera and took a lot of pictures. We bought pictures that the rafting company took. Now I know exactly where I got nearly thrown from the raft. I was completely under a wave of water. Wow. The place we used is about 10 miles north of Big Sky.

Tomorrow, Virginia City to see a ghost town.

Boca, we will be in the area Friday, but not sure if we will connect.

This has been a great trip. My three ladies have been working just fine. The car (Sue) has been perfect, getting 27 or higher MPG and with no problems. The GPS (Jill) has been so helpful in finding the attractions along the road. And the wife (Kim) has been helpful on spotting animals on the Yellowstone loop and just a great traveling companion.

Your trip sounds like so much fun, especially the water rafting. Can't wait to see your pics.

You say that you left the park at 5:30pm-ish. Was that because the park closed and you HAD to leave? Or becasue you'd had enough for the day? What local time is it getting too dark to see anything?

How has the traffic been within the park? Bumper to bumper or "regular" moving along but at a slow pace?

What was the name of the raft company you used? We are definitely doing a raft trip and would appreciate recommendations of who to use.

You are making me REALLY look forward to our trip there next summer!!

I was told the park stay open 24 hours a day. There is not a park ranger at the entrance 24 hours a day however you are expect to pay when you leave if you enter when there is no ranger.

The traffics varies sometime it is slow and other times it is slower. It depends where you are in the park and what animals are around. I would say most of the time you can drive 30 - 40 MPGs. I would say the traffic moves along but at a slow pace?

You can see until about 9:45.
