  • Early Season Skiing

Can anyone recommend a western ski resort in Colorado, Utah or California that usually has plenty of early season snow. We are interested in going out west during either Thanksgiving or the first week of December.

    Thanks.

For deciding on a ski resort for early season skiing, you should probably look at resorts that have good snow making capability. Here in CO, I would put Keystone or Copper Mountain on the top of my list for early season skiing because of that. Keystone is almost always open mid-October because they are about the most aggressive in running the snow making equipment. Then when the mountains do start getting good snows, those places will have a better base than those resorts that do not do much snow making.

So if you plan a stay somewhere in Summit County, which includes the towns of Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon, Keystone, I think you would have a quite good chance of decent early season skiing. Colorado resorts are also higher in elevation than most other places, so that gives a slight advantage to those resorts as well.

Kurt, thanks for your help. I think we are leaning toward Keystone but we may choose Breckenridge since we have never skied there.

We just returned from Breckenridge tonight. We did an II exchange into the Grand Timber resort. Loved it.

If you do try early (Thanksgiving), Keystone, etc. may be open but usually with very limited terrain. Early opening is mostly a PR deal and not top to bottom, all trails opening. I would also recommend using rental skis as the coverage of the rocks may not be the best.

If you do choose Summit County, you can stay anywhere and get to Keystone, A Basin, Copper, Breckenridge easily on the Summit Stage Free bus, (if it is still running in these days of high diesel prices).

Even Steamboat (1:30 -2:00 hours away) is possible.

          Cheers
