  • For those wondering, "Should we go to GNP?"

This is looking back, not even close to half way up, heading from McDonald Lake to St Mary.

From the Going to the Sun Highway.

Thanks for the picture Robert....GNP is drop dead gorgeous! I would go back in a heart beat...this time on our own and spend more time.

        Great!

I drive myself crazy finding "acceptable" resorts at "acceptable" times for this area all the time.

        Too small.

        Too early.

        Too late.

and Robert goes posting more about Glacier National Park as if Boca's trip reports from last summer weren't enough to make us all half crazy to visit there.

        SIGH

        No rest for the weary.

PS: I do hope you all know I'm kidding with you.

I'm going to Yellowstone in August and I'm thinking of redoing my trip to include GNP; even if for a few days. Have to start seriously looking at spending more time out there

              Yes. Do Go

It takes a day to drive up from YNP and another to drive back. One to look around.
If you raft or hike or fish... well... ok... take a week!!!

That gash in the mountainside, gaining in altitude, is Going-to-the-Sun Highway. Motorhomes are not permitted.

This drive does eventually go up and over a pass.

              Anyone want a driver?

It is a very beautiful drive.

It is unreal. There are many pullouts.

Oh yes, there is a pass over those mountains ahead.

Jeri, LOL, you and I keep selecting the same locations around the country. SFX got me a week outside Yellowstone in August, but I had to turn it down because it was only a 1 BR. I followed you to Sedona last year, and we're going to Albuquerque and Santa Fe in the fall this year.

Aw Sue....it would have been great if you were going. Is there still a chance you may get an exchange?

I left my request in place, but told them I need a 2 BR. We'll see.

We slept-in at Gardiner Motel. Went back into Y to goof around Mammoth, then out though Gardiner and set up camp near Missoula (waste of time), shopped then drove backroad, ate a sit down lunch en-route to Kalispel and into Whitefish early. Had time to drive around looking the area over before dark. (First part of September.)

If you are at Mammoth, it is around 6.5 hours via Missoula.
Add 2 hours from Jackson Hole out 22 and up I-15 and 90.
That's a long day but doable by switch driving.

Glacier National Park is beautiful. I would say if you have never been there and are considering a trip, go. It is also very high on my "return to" list.
Going to Sun Road is the certerpiece of the park and allows you a 50 mile drive from one side to the other thru mountains with super views and also a cross of the continental divide.
The park also has an incredible system of trails that allow for very serious backpacking trips but also great day trips that after the first mile give you the feeling that you are very much in the wilderness. These short hikes range from 2 to 10 miles and are a great way to see more of the park.
For some additional photos here is a link to my GNP Webshots alblum:

As Lawren has already pointed out the Timeshares near there are not super easy to get but they do exist. In my opinion the best Timeshare for seeing Glacier Park is Glacier Wilderness. It is made up of 1 and 2 bedroom log cabins and is only 10 miles from the Western Park Entrance.
