  • Island Park Village Resort in ID.

Beside Yellowstone, are there things to do at or near Island Park Village Resort in ID? We are going there in August with our two young Grandsons - ages 6 & 8 and would like to do things closer a couple of days.

A few of things come to mind:

    1) Fly fishing (world reknowned area for fly fishing)
    2) Visit Mesa Falls (really pretty set of falls just south of IPV)
    3) Visit Harriman State Park (south of IPV)
    4) Kick around West Yellowstone (kind of touristy)
    5) Visit Big Springs (large natural spring)
    6) Visit the Grizzly Bear center in West Yellowstone.

There are a couple of musical theatre productions, one in Island Park, another in West Yellowstone. Depending on which show it is, youngsters might like it. I think we saw Footloose.

You can also float down the river in a canoe or other small boat near Mack's Inn (in IP)(not terribly expensive). They'll take you up to the headwaters (a large spring), and you float back down to Mack's Inn. Takes about an hour or so if you don't stop for a picnic or fishing.

There's a peak you can drive to the top of if you have 4WD. The road's just a mile or so from the resort.

Now, if you don't like outdoor activities, there's not a lot for you to do. It's a really beautiful area, and plenty of hiking, fishing, boating, waterskiing, birdwatching, wildlife watching, etc. are all available.

I suspect the staff will also have a lot of great ideas.

Any other ideas of things to do around Island Park? We do like the outdoors

I had heard that the staff wasn't very helpful.

One of our members is visiting this week....I hope she will post what she did when she returns.

I plan to visit in 2012 and will use it as a base to visit national parks and historic areas.

JWCs' pictures pushed me over the top on this one! Thanks John

Idahodude mentioned the peak - it is Sawtelle peak. THe first time we took our kids it was July and there was snow at the top. THey were amazed. Views are great - you can see 3 states. We have always gone in a regular 2 wheel drive car.

Drive down towards Ashton and go to warm river. Take lots of bread - there is no fishing here and there are hundreds of fish at the bridge - kids loved this when they were young.

The float from big springs is very easy and a lot of fun. We rolled our canoe twice - it is very shallow. If you find a pair of compact Nikon binos - they are the ones we lost - send them my way.

You can rent horses in Harriman park - the resort has a discount set up. They also have a discount day for the Grizly center and Imax.

Also go to the Yellowstone museum in west yellowstone.

THe resort has golf, tennis, racketball, and a pool. They used to have a rootbeer float and info meeting on Sunday and one day they do a barbeque.

There is a visitors center at quake Lake that is very interesting and worth a stop.

A trip to Jackson is fun - they have an old west shoot out in the square in the evenings.

Fishing is great, hiking is great. There are lots of areas to do both.
