No damage to the Quarter, Magazine alot of shops up and running also. The Harrah's casino is open so be ready to gamble. You can even venture out to Boomtown on the westbank to gamble. Gretna which is also across the river is up and running. Jefferson Parish is up and running also. The usual becareful of certain areas, and by the way some of those so-called beautiful females along Bourbon are males in drag. The Audubon Zoo is up and running so is the golf course. The food service is a little on the slow side, but picking up. We are praying for a mild hurricane season. Yes, the summer months are hot! Want to know what is going on read the paper on internet, http://www.nola.com Frank I hope you have a wonderful time down here, too bad it's October, right now everyone is sucking heads and pinching tails. Now before anyone gets their mind in the gutter, I am talking crayfish to some, crawfish to others, and mudbugs to the rest. Seriously some places you can get them all year since they have farm raised ones. Frank, you better start dieting now, because you know it is weight gain city down here!Comment

NOLA - Different Perspective
I just returned today from NOLA and I will have to say that on a visit downtown it appeared that all is back up and running. Even immediate surrounding areas appear to have many businesses up and running. Would highly recommend a visit to Sweet Fire and Ice for dinner and desert (one highlight of my trip.)
ON THE OTHER HAND, where I was staying in St. Bernard's Parish, Arabi to be exact, it needs a lot of work. A group of us from our church went down to assist in the clean-up and rebuilding effort for 8 days. The areas worst hit like St. Bernard's Parish still need lots of time and effort to rebuild. With FEMA just pulling out at the end of last month and tons of people still living in temporary quarters, my encouragement is going to be that if at all possible go to NOLA, esp. St. Bernard's Parish, to help out. Plenty of civic, and of course religious organizations, will host anyone willing to come and put in some blood, sweat, and tears.

Apologies, I was in NOLA for Jazz Fest May 5-7 but was a little tied up at work and did not post a trip report.
A number of hotels are up and running but some still out of commission are Hyatt, Hotel Monaco, etc. Timeshares such as Quarter House, Club Le Pension, Hotel l'eau du Vie (the part that did not burn down), Chateau Orleans, etc. are back in business, most since end of last year.
A number of restauarants are still closed: Commander's Palace, Mike Andersens, etc. but some favourite like Mothers, Acme Oyster House, K-Paul, Bacco, Palace Cafe, etc. are up and runnig.
Music is back too and French Quarter fair well in the reconstruction. Preservation Hall just reopened and Bourbon St. is back in business and Pat O'Brians are busy again. The food is still incredible but service is probably a little slower since everyone is still short staffed.
Some parts of the city you can see the signs Katrina left and there are definite difference. The locals I met are very happy to see visitors again and chatted with several at JazzFest and some are rebuilding their homes, life and community.
I would recommend others to visit NOLA and will try to find time soon to go back again and will definitely try to go back next March when I own my week(s).
Oh, had several Beignets at Cafe du Monde and was powdered in sugar afterward

Which makes Bourbon Street pretty similar to most every beach in America. Just not your typical street wear in most towns. Live in a beach town and everyone wears beach suits everywhere. I think it just depends how you define normal.Originally posted by bigfrankComment

Are there any tours through the flooded/ravaged areas? Last time we took a wrong turn for the freeway and had a pleasant drive through a lot of the lower ninth ward. How're the roads out that way now? What's a good way to get out and see the aftermath of Katrina one year later?Comment

My daughter was there this week with a church mission trip. Her accommodations weren't quite up to "Gold Crown" standards. Can't wait to hear the stories... They spent at least part of the week helping owners empty houses down to the bare studs so they could be "disinfected" and re-built. Today they spent in Destin FL, snorkeling and chasing big fish.
