      TN Smoky Mountains Christmas

I read where just about every building along the ten mile strip of the Parkway
(Route 441) is outlined with colorful lights and special scenes, some of which
are animated. Anyone been to Gatlinburg TN during the Christmas Holidays?

We usually spend a night or two in Gatlinburg on the way home from visiting my parents for Thanksgiving. There are indeed a lot of Christmas lights there at that time.

The lights are put up around the first of November and stay up until the end of Winterfest, which I think is early February. There are lots of huge light sculptures. Patriot Park has the largest group of big ones, with a giant liberty bell, the Golden Gate Bridge and other similar landmarks.

I saw some new ones on the road to Dollywood last weekend. There's a large battle ship and a couple of other boats. A lot of the displays are on side streets and they move them around from year to year. In the past, they've published a map to help you find them. I don't know if they still do that.

We usually wait until after the Christmas rush and try to get up to Gatlinburg to see the ones there. Add the millions of lights at Dollywood to the mix and you can certainly get your fix of lights.

I'm not sure this would be a great location. You're a long way from PF, Gatlinburg and the Park and there is a lot of traffic between this location and anywhere else.

                Historic Gatlinburg Inn,

the city's third major hotel, was constructed
by R. L. (Rellie) Maples, Sr., son of David Crockett and Cora Ogle Maples
between 1937 and 1940. His wife, Wilma Maples, still operates the facility.

                * Gatlinburg's city offices were located here in 1946-47
                * The city's First National Bank was organized within its walls
                * Gatlinburg's first large press newspaper also started here
                * The city's first Dentist, Dr. Meaker, even had an office in this Inn

"Lady Bird" Johnson, Liberace, Dinah Shore, J.C.Penney,
Tennessee Ernie Ford, and Melville Bell Grosvenor

If travelers are like my wife, take motion sickness pills. The road does wind.

I found the cemetery very interesting. The dates really tell about that time period; the diseases and weather.

We were lucky to see Louise Mandrel when we were at Pigeon Forge couple years back. She isn’t performing now, but that was a top notch show.

I live about an hour from Gatlingburg and I have to say the most beautiful time is in Oct. The leaves are just breathtaking. At Christmas it is a winter wonderland. It is a quaint town with so many lights. If you are lucky, you might even get some snow.I go about every month or so to either Dollywood in Pigeon Forge or shopping. Dollywood is a great place for kids and we love the homemade ice cream. Gatlingurg/Pigeon Forge is a great place to get away. Email me if you ever want more information.

Tennessee Dept of Transportation - Highway Improvement Project

State of Tennessee - Great Smoky Mountains Parkway

The Tennessee Department of Transportation in cooperation with the
Federal Highway Administration began the first phase of the Highway 66,
Great Smoky Mountains Parkway improvement project in July 2009.

Phase One construction will be from State Route 338, Boyds Creek Highway
to Nichols Street in Sevierville. The entire project from I-40 to downtown
Sevierville will widen the existing highway from four (4) lanes to six (6) lanes
improving congestion and enhancing safety for the traveling public.

Phase One of the highway 66 improvement project is funded
by The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
The project is estimated to be complete by November 2011.

Highway 66 serves as the main artery into the popular tourist areas of Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Over eight (8) million people visit the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park each year, making it the most visited national park in the country.
