Bernadette Peters plays New Orleans on Thursday (Feb. 28) and she’s working with a heck of a band. The Broadway diva will share the stage with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, joining a distinguished list of pop headliners -- Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, Terence Blanchard and Mariachi Vargas -- who have worked with the spunky, player-owned ensemble in recent years.
“I’m excited about working with New Orleans musicians,” Peters said in a recent phone interview. “It’s a place where a singer is just about guaranteed to have a great musical experience.”
Peters has fond memories of playing the Blue Room at the Roosevelt Hotel (back when it was called the Fairmont). She shopped the Quarter for antique jewelry and connected with a favorite waiter at Galatoire’s. She also worked with Harry Connick, Jr. in a movie that was shot in New Orleans.
Bernadette Peters is planning a program that leans heavily on Stephen Sondheim and Rogers and Hammerstein.

Peters also knows her way around the American Songbook and is planning a program that leans heavily on Stephen Sondheim and Rogers and Hammerstein.
“I’ve changed over the years, and so have these song,” Peters said. “They give me different insights every time I sing them, so they never get stale for me.”
The Tony Award-winner won’t rein in her acting skills because she is gigging with folks who usually play Beethoven and Brahms.
“I’ll be sprawled on the piano when I sing ‘Fever,’ but every song calls for me to get in character,” she said. “I have to live through the song if I want to hit a nerve with the audience. Otherwise, I’d just be hitting notes.”
Peters will also one of the tunes she wrote for “Broadway Barks,” a best-selling children’s book and CD that she produced to benefit animal shelters in New York City.
“I don’t consider myself a songwriter – not a craftsman like Sondheim,” Peters said. “In fact, the piece came to me as a gift – both music and lyrics – while I was on a plane. We were landing when it all came to mind. I sang it into a tape recorder when I got home.”
