  • Southern Decadence In New Orleans: A Touchy Subject

I have a floating two-bedroom unit in New Orleans at Club La Pension. I'm thinking about booking it for Southern Decadence Week (the gay/lesbian New Orleans festival) and renting it out. My guess is that it will likely bring in some good money as a rental.

The downside: I also suspect that I will get a lot of hate mail from religious fanatics and homophobes, since it is essentially, from what I understand, a giant gay/lesbian quasi-orgy in the city.

Personally, I say live and let live. I just wanted to find out what you all think about my plan. Do you think it's worth a shot, or not worth the hassle? Normally, I list my rentals on ebay. I suspect some people will complain to the ebay folks about the ad as inappropriate because of the subject matter (no, I don't plan on mentioning orgies or sex, but I doubt that will stop the complaints), but given ebay's general apathy toward such things, I figure I will probably be able to finish the auction.

    Comments? Ideas?

Steve book it but leave the holiday info out. People that want that week I am sure already know what is going on.

I often see weeks advertised for Key West Fantasy Fest...so, list your week using the name of the festival. Fantasy Fest is known world wise as I believe Southern Decadence is.

Ebay actuall has a listing area for gay/lesbian items, so I doubt that Ebay will do anything as long as the ad is in "good taste".

OK, I decided to give it a shot. I have always found that, on ebay, you need to sell the event when you're listing a rental, so I did it (I hope with good taste), with only a slight hint at how sordid it can be. We'll see how it does. Mardi Gras has always been a great moneymaker for me. Jazz Fest not as much. But my understanding is that Southern Decadence is about the fifth largest moneymaker for the city's tourist industry, so it might do well.

          Joy--

I looked for that area but couldn't find it, so I just listed in the travel areas. How would I find the gay/lesbian areas of ebay, if I wanted to promote my listing there?

The hate mail won't be any more of a hassle than the garden variety off-shore check scammers.

It's your place so if you feel OK about renting it then do so. What other people think is their thoughts and should not be considered.

Just reading through old posts and am curious. Were you able to rent this out?

No. Someone complained about the auction and ebay shut it down as "inappropriate." So the week went unused.
