We enjoyed The Hermitage (Andrew Jackson's home) and the Parthenon replica; the Parthenon replica is well researched and interesting. There's the Grand Olde Opery, of course--get your tickets as soon as possible. You can spend an afternoon inside the Gaylord hotel, just wandering and pausing for a drink at a revolving restaurant or taking a canal ride, etc. We also drove down to Memphis to see Graceland. It was an easy day trip, and I was glad we did it. The house itself wasn't particularly interesting to me, but all the material on Elvis' career was fascinating.

Things to see an do around Nashville

Frommer's puts out a good travel guide for Nashville and Memphis, but it focuses mostly on historical sites, art, and music and does not say much on natural sites, although there are several state parks within a couple of hours' drive.

To find out more about the activities at the resort: go to
          www.fairfieldresorts.com

Find Fairfield Nashville and click on Activities.

We liked the Grand Ole Opry, the bus tours, the Gaylord Hotel, the Opry Mills Mall, and the Cowboy Church worship sersvice (mostly country Gospel music, some preaching).

If your interest in history extends to family history and you have TN relatives to research, the TN State Library and Archives has an unusually large collection of TN materials.

There were a lot of Civil War battles in TN, but the some of best known (e.g. Shiloh) are not really close to Nashville. Sites connected with the Battles of Nashville, Stones River, and Franklin, though, are relatively close, and there are plenty of them to explore in a week.

          In the Nashville area are:
          • Cumberland Science Museum - has brochures for a driving tour of the sites for the Battle of Nashville ( 1864)
          • Belle Meade Plantation (usually one of the tours on Fairfield's schedule)
          • Belmont Mansion
          • Historic Travellers Reset
          • Mount Olivet Cemtery
          • Tennessee State Capitol and State Museum

The Nashville National Cemtetery is actually in Madison, a suburb

Smyrna, TN has a museum at the home of Sam Davis, the "boy hero of the Confederacy" whom the Union convicted and executed for spying when he was 21.

Sites for the Battle of Franklin:
          • Carter House (Franklin, TN,1864)
          • Carnton Plantation (Franklin, TN, another haven't visited it myself but read that the mansion floors were permanently bloodstained after housing the Confederate casualties).
          • Fort Granger (Franklin, TN)
          • Lotz House (Franklin, TN)
          • McGavock Confederate Cemetery (Franklin, TN)
          • Winstead Hill (Franklin, TN)

And sites for the Battle of Stones River (1863) are near Murfreesboro:
          • Fortress Rosecrans
          • Stones River National Battlefield
          • Oaklands Historic House Museum

One of my favorite things to do when we go to Nashville is to go Lynchburg and take the tour of the Jack Daniels distillery.

Whenever you're in the vicinity of Lynchburg, just over an hour's drive from Nashville, drop by for a firsthand look at the Distillery. One of the guides will accompany you on a tour and tell you the complete story of our whiskey. And you’ll probably hear an interesting story or two about Mr. Jack as well.

              Tour hours are: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

They are open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day. Tours last about an hour and fifteen minutes and start every fifteen minutes or so.

Lynchburg is the seat of Moore County, the smallest county in Tennessee. Even though it’s home to the Distillery, it’s a dry county and has been ever since Prohibition. And while the Distillery may be the main attraction here, you don't want to miss other local favorites like lunch at Miss Mary Bobo’s Boarding House and a trip to the Lynchburg Hardware And General Store. If you want to explore all the sights in Lynchburg, take your time. There’s plenty to see.

Don't forget to eat at Monell's. Not diet friendly but delicious!! Go to the Nashville Palce for talent night. Go on the mystery tour with Tootsie's tours(leaves from the resort) or any of their tours. I liked the graveyard tour ( country stars graves) A gazillion things to do. shaggy

we enjoyed our week in Nashville and had plenty to do, enough so that we can return and not duplicate the things that we did.
