Does this occur the same weekend each year?

      Now you're thinkin'...

Yes. It's two consecutive weekends. The trick is to pick one first and keep your fingers crossed for when the lineup is announced. But, really, both weekends are always great. Or you could wait and choose based on the lineup, but air and lodging are at more of a premium.

I've got first weekend this year, James Taylor is quite a lovely bonus

Festival International de Jazz de Montréal - The Festival

I know N.O. is big for jazz - but if it's a festival you want...

...you haven't been to an free outdoor concert until you've seen Timbalada (brasilian band founded by Carlinhos Brown in Salvador, Bahia) in downtown Montreal...along with 100,000 plus other fans...shoulder to shoulder (and other body parts)

Wow, what great headliners! How do you choose who to see, there are so many choices?

Are there venues all over the city? I've never been but have heard about this festival for many years.

I was fortunate to be indoctrinated by Jazzfest pros.. Here's their system:
Before the fest (but not out yet) will be a detailed program of who's playing on which stages when, so you can get an idea of who you most want to see. All stages are set around a big racetrack oval with lots of great, affordable food and some good crafts shopping in the center. There will be one major headliner a day, usually toward the late afternoon, playing on the biggest stage. That's where you should set up camp if you want to see it, because if you try to get over there later, you'll never make it through the crowds. Then you can wander to other stages as you wish, and hopefully some of your group will be happy to see who ever is playing earlier at the big stage so you don't leave your stuff completely abandoned for too long. That said, I managed to miss Stevie Wonder last year because we didn't make it back ahead of time enough, and couldn't get through the crowd to our friends, and couldn't see anything.

There are also some good acts in the evenings (after fest hours) at House of Blues. And Rock N Bowl is also great fun, we do that on Thursday night, last year Buckwheat Zydeco played there.

Shmuggee -- the Montreal festival sounds great! I don't go to Jazzfest for jazz -- there are some good smaller jazz acts but it has become much more than that over the years...

            I'm getting psyched!

This sounds absolutely fabulous, crowded, but fabulous.
Glad you're getting a JT bonus as well, lucky you

Yes, crowded. And I ordinarily can't handle crowds. But there is a place on the way in that serves killer drinks to go, it helps (only beer available inside) Seriously, it also helps for me to be with a group of people, and I must say the crowd down there is unbelievably nice - mellow, but fun, no fights or rowdiness, just a lot of good times being had by all -- so it never gets out of hand -

I'll be there this year. I have a timeshare (week 18) at Jazz Fest each year that I usually rent out. But once in awhile, like this year, I use it myself. Once every seven years, either week 17 or week 18 does not fall during Jazz Fest. So, Jazz Fest week owners at NOLA timeshares get 6 out of 7 years at Jazz Fest.

This is unlike Mardi Gras weeks, where the owners of NOLA week 7 float to Mardi Gras week each year.

Anyway, if anyone wants to meet up, I'll be at Hotel de L'Eau Vive this year for the first weekend in May. Probably with a group.

I'm there the weekend prior, so will miss you. But I'm glad you'll be there this year, it's going to be great!
