I am considering looking for an exchange in Gatlinberg for 7/10. I see that some of the resorts are 10 miles or so away from the town, while some are right in the town. Which would you recommend? We are not golfers, so we are not necessarily looking for the golf course location. We would like to see the Smoky Mountains, some shopping, some short driving tours, some walking locally. Thanks.

Try for a resort in Gatlinburg, not Pigeon Forge. You can easily access the Smoky Mtn Park and see the Aquarium and shop downtown. If you like crafts, drive the craft loop. Pigeon Forge has outlet malls and Dollyworld, but is somewhat of a drive (especially in summer with traffic) to the mountains and Gatlinburg. Gatlinburg Town Square is a good resort with a convenient location.Venda

We've stayed at Gatlinburg Town Square and, while not the ritzyest of resorts we've vacationed at, it was comfortable and had a GREAT location. There's a trolley stop right outside the resort and, the resort is within walking distance to what I refer to the Gatlinburg strip or tourist shopping strip.
I have pictures of the resort if that is of help to you. I do not know if they exchange only through I.I. or if they exchange through both Interval and RCI. Our exchange was through Interval and our unit was in the newer phase 2 section. Units that are in phase one have a slightly different layout as I understand it and don't have washer/dryer combo's in the rooms but, the overall quality should be pretty much the same.
You can access our photo album by clicking the picture below or, you can click the link in my signature but you'll have to search through the photo albums on my Webshots page to find the GTS album (it's about midway down on the first page).
BTW, July is going to be hot and crowded in The Great Smokey Mountain National Park. We went the last week of May and had a few days in June during our stay.
