NOLA's Jazz Fest is an incredible event. Hundreds of musicians, including some very big names, perform over two weekends each year: The last weekend of April and the first weekend of May.
I went last year and saw Buddy Guy, Brian Wilson, Nelly, James Taylor, Theresa James, and many others, just to name a few.
This year, Bruce Springsteen will be there, as will Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthews, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Lionel Richie, Koko Taylor, Etta James, Ani DiFranco, and many others. There are local and national dixieland bands, jazz bands, gospel choirs, and there are often tents and stages highlighting different kinds of music. Last year was a tent for dixieland, a tent for gospel, a stage for Cajun music, a stage for World Music, three main stages where the huge headliners appeared, a stage for funk, a stage for blues, and many, many more.
The whole thing takes place at the fairgrounds, and it costs something like $25 per weekend to get admission and see hundreds of amazing musicians each weekend. On top of that, there are food booths with all the local foods, where you can get amazing food, drink, beer, wine, etc., as well as some local crafts booths.
There is a shuttle that takes you from Canal St., just outside the French Quarter, to the fairgrounds and back every 15-30 minutes daily.
At night, the fairgrounds shuts down, but the bars on Bourbon St. keep going, with live music and some of the Jazz Fest musicians sitting in, and of course, amazing NOLA food all over.
It is so worth going that I bought a timeshare for jazzfest each year at Hotel de L'Eau Vive. If you are interested in more info on NOLA's Jazz Fest, Click this link.

In fact, it celebrates all music that has been influenced by the music of New Orleans. This includes Rock, Funk, Hip Hop, Blues, Folk, Dixieland, World Music, R&B, as well as jazz. In other words, all music.
Thus, when Brian Wilson played last year, he played a lot of his old Beach Boys songs. When Nelly played, he did his normal thing. Springsteen will play his normal music, as will Elvis Costello and the rest this year.
Jazz Fest is a celebration of music, not only of jazz.

Couldn't help but get a chuckle out of your comment above. That's like Rod Stewart trying to sing the classics now. I guess old musicians have to try in some way to re-invent themselves.

I never would have guessed that one of my faves from the 70's, Joni Mitchell, would go so heavily into jazz. Jazz is a great American music genre, so lots of rockers get attracted to it sooner or later. Others that come to mind are Elvis Costello, Jane Siberry, Sting. Folks in jazz also cross over to pop...Georgie Benson springs immediately to mind. Boppers the Manhattan Transfer is another example. It's *all* good!

Jazz Fest is not a jazz concert. It celebrates any kind of music that has been influenced by the music of New Orleans. In other words, all kinds of music.
The music played there includes Rock, Funk, Hip Hop, Blues, Jazz, Dixieland, Latino, Gospel, World Music, Celtic, Folk, Easy Listening, and much more. Lots of people don't understand that it is not a jazz event. It is a music event.
