Named after Queen Charlotte, the wife of England’s King George III,
during the mid 1700s, the city was founded at the intersection of
two Indian trading paths near the Catawba River.
The county name, Mecklenburg, came from Queen Charlotte’s homeland
of Germany. Charlotte is sometimes referred to as “The Queen City.”
Charlotte was settled in 1755 by Thomas Polk and Thomas Spratt
between two Native American trading posts.
The North-South trading post is now known as Tryon Street
named after William Tryon, former Governor of Colonial North Carolina.
Known as the Great Wagon Road (renamed Tryon Street) which ran
north-south, and the other ran east-west, is today’s Trade Street.
The intersection of Tryon and Trade is known as The Square.
as part of the construction of the Cowans Ford Dam by Duke Energy, is the
largest manmade body of fresh water located entirely within North Carolina.
It is fed by the Catawba River.
It was named after former Duke Power president Norman Cocke. Lake Norman
is sometimes referred to as the "inland sea"; it offers 520 miles (840 km) of
shoreline and a surface area of more than 50 square miles (130 km2).
Full pond elevation at Lake Norman is 760 feet (230 m).
Interstate 77, North Carolina Highway 16 and North Carolina Highway 150
