  • Myrtle Beach considering imposing tourist taxes on timeshare owners..

SC tax panel considers levy on time shares | The Augusta Chronicle

Gotta love the government.. Timeshare has been getting quite a bit of bad press in the area lately- guess they figured that they could get away with another tax on those "nasty" timeshare people....

Hopefully, ARDA will be able to make some political contributions to the right people and make all this go away...

Company chief executive Ken McKelvey says the state can't have it both ways. If time-share owners are tourists, they shouldn't be paying property taxes.
I agree with McKelvey. They shouldn't be able to have it both ways, sheesh!

If TS owners get taxed, so should anyone who rents out any property in SC. And if you live there are have friends or relatives over - even for the day - then they should pay their fair share of taxes too. After all, they are "tourists" too!

Myrtle Beach government are kind of weird. They were getting so much business from Bike week, then they made so many restrictions that made it so no one wanted to go. In fact, it was said in some reports that it had been canceled. Now I see that the helmet law was overturned.

Now they are trying add taxes to their guests in their area.

Don't I already pay taxes there??

But as owners with deeded property in Myrtle Beach, we're already paying taxes as part of our HOA fees. So that would be double taxation...doesn't sound right to me! We bought our timeshare property there so we could vacation in an area we enjoy enough to go back to yearly. I understand the occupancy tax for hotels and condo rentals, but not an additional tax on the owners already paying taxes there, so I agree this is a bad idea.

Hoteliers push to impose accommodation taxes on time shares | islandpacket.com

This new article makes it appear the tax proposal is statewide, not just limited to Myrtle Beach..

I think there are more Time shares in Hilton Head then in Myrtle beach. This will hurt them more in HH

HHI is one BIG timeshare zone. Myrtle Beach can't begin to compete. I think Marriott alone has 8 timeshare resorts on the island.

The hearing on this has now been delayed and is expected to be moved! I guess the publicity and attention have generated enough interest that they actually expect people to attend the public hearing..

Unless you have someplace the people are willing to go no matter what the price, raising taxes on tourists just isn't a smart thing to do. Ask Alaska, who imposed restrictive taxes on cruise tourism. The immediate reaction was for Disney to cancel plans to cruise Alaska and Royal Caribbean pulled one of three ships out of Alaska. That one tax cost them the revenue of over 2,000 passengers per week for the season. My guess is it's close to being a backwards tax that has cost the state revenue and jobs rather than increase revenue.

I tend to visit places that want to put additional unfair taxes on me less and those that make it easier to vist more. Should S. Carolina want to put an additional property tax on me, I'll still visit but, it will be less often.

A few more good articles against the SC tax on timeshare owners..

etimesharenews.com: Timeshare owners being threatened with additional taxes in South Carolina!

Thank goodness the proposal also tried to move around how the money is spent- and who gets to do the spending! Looks like that part of the proposal is what will hopefully help to get it rejected.

ARDA is submitting articles to SC papers to help explain the importance of timeshare development to the local economies.. I've always wondered why they don't consistently do this all the time, or do you think it's just that the local editors don't publish unless it ties to another local story?

They need to get all resorts to identify all timeshare owners in the counties represented by the committee members and start flooding them with phone calls, emails, letters, etc.
