  • Drive time HHI to SAV

I'm looking for real life drive time between Savannah, Ga and Hilton Head, Sc.

    Pat H?

Also-if anyone has driven from Augusta, GA to either of these places. I'm wondering if I can do day trips from Augusta OR if I should plan on spending a night or two in/on Hilton Head with side trips to Savannah or vice versa.

    Decisions, Decisions.

We've driven it a couple of times. Seems like I allow for an hour but it's typically less than that. It seems to me it's usually 45 minutes or so.
Our timeshare and other photo's at http://dougp26364.smugmug.com/

That has been my experience as well.

I don't know anything about Augusta, but if choosing between HHI and Savannah, it's a choice about city(ish) v. beach. When will you be going?

The height of summer It's probably going to be so stinkin' hot/humid but it is what it is.

I have family in Augusta, Ga which will be my base. I'd like very much to spend a couple nights on HHI...and see Savannah. If I stay on HHI for just a couple of nights-I don't want to waste my beach time by going to Savannah-if I was on HHI for a week-then no problem.

Eh, I just mapquested from Augusta. It might be a little far for a day trip...doable but would make for a very long day with driving.

        ***********

Can you also help me with location on HHI? The plantations/beaches confuse me. I was looking at the Forest Beach area..do I want to be near the Coligny Plaza or is that a really busy area..or would I want that (ability to walk to places to eat, etc) for just a couple of nights. Does anyone know about the Holiday Inn right there..is it ok? I'm not really a 'fancy' hotel girl. Clean and simple, well located is fine with me.

My experiences were about 6 years ago (we were there for a week each time, 2 years apart, stayed in t/s in Shipyard Plantation, about a mile and a half from Coligny. Kids biked there, I walked ) --

Coligny would be great IMO. Walking to places is nice, but the main thing is ability to get on the beach. There are restrictions as to where you can enter although the beaches are public and you can walk or bike along the sand all over the island, you are not allowed to access it from a lot of private proerties.
Coligny is a nice public beach with services - restrooms, food, and easy access to the beach.

Don't know anything about the HI. And it took us 45 minutes to Savannah, easy trip on quiet country roads.

I live in Bluffton so it takes me less than a 1/2 hour to get to Savannah. Probably takes about the same amount of time to get to the end of the island. At least 45 mins - 1 hr to Savannah from the island.

I was going to say 30 minutes, but it has been a few years.

Another option is Tybee Island. Minutes to Savannah. Not MY favorite beach, but a lot of people love it.

I bought a timeshare there just to trade and rent. It's my top trader.

Yes. I was looking at a really neat map of that particular area that showed where public beach access was...if anyone has any others-I'd love to look at them. It showed condo complexes, resorts, T/s's etc.

I actually found some private condos on the beach for reasonable rates if we go for more than a few days.

I'll have to ask the family "Georgians" what they think. Funny thing is I think they have only been to HHI once and weren't necessarily impressed. However, I don't know if they brought their kids. I know mine would love to go. It's the beach for goodness sakes..and it's a "different" beach than what we know out here in California. My kids are such great travelers..anything "new" is fine with them. I guess I'm lucky.

I was there with my family in August, and it was hot, hot hot! We did love it tho, and I would certainly suggest visiting if you're going to HHI. It's just so close, and the city is very organized and walkable. It makes a great day trip from HHI.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Hilton Head got shot down by the Southerners....I knew it would. "Condos on the beach" is what they said. To which my husband said, I think that's what we like. LOL. Savannah is on the list though. Yay!

I'm actually pretty excited about Savannah. Would love to hear must dos.

I think I'd like to go to Mrs.Wilkes dining hall and take the tour of the First African Baptist Church. Maybe see where my Mother went to Nursing school.

Unfortunately, my southern relatives are a bit narrow minded-so they can go on a Paula Deen tour while we see the church. I hope. Sigh.

Funny-they mentioned Tybee Island...though in the same fashion as you swilshire. They also mentioned Hunting Island as a nice beach. Maybe we won't see the beach.

Not excited about the humidity but I haven't been back there for about 14 years...so it's time.

Just plan to be indoors mid-day and you'll be fine. There are some nice historic homes/tours and Savannah is a beautiful city. You can take a day trip to Hilton Head...

Beaufort SC is nice to visit. Big southern mansions. Tree-lined streets.

                              Well...we're back.

We ended up overnighting in Savannah and did a little very short side trip to HHI-just to kind of have a look see and eat lunch.

45 mins from Savannah to HHI is about right. We then drove from HHI back to Augusta, GA. GPS took us straight through the middle of some smaller towns and the speed limit was like 35!! OMG-I thought we would never get back.

The country roads were quite the experience for us Southern Californians
