In a poll, readers of Conde-Nast, a leading travel magazine, have named Charleston, SC as the top travel destination in the US, and number 2 in the world, behind Florence, Italy:

Since a large proportion of the magazine's readers are Americans, I would question the world-wide ranking, but the US ranking is interesting. Conde-Nast readers also tend to be more sophisticated travelers, and their preferences may not hold true for less sophisticated travelers.
I remember that RCI employee Bootleg, who used to post on several TS websites told us that Charleston had one of the highest excesses of demand over supply in the entire RCI system, so timeshare experience would seem to bear out this Conde-Nast result.
