  • A week in Kill Devil Hills, OBX, NC

First and foremost I'd like to thank the membership for their contributions on things to do, places to eat and "gotta sees". That information is priceless and helped make for a memorable trip.

If you have not been to the Outer Banks it should go on your "short list", particularly if you are a beach person and prefer location over mega-resorts. The beaches are magnificent. Golden sands, small waves, dolphins cruise by and they stretch further than the eye can see. The ocean temperatures are pleasant. The people are extremely helpful and outgoing. There is so much to do and see that one week is not enough in which to do it all.

We went to Ockracoke Island to view the number one beach in the US, DS took a hang gliding lesson on Jockey's Ridge < a MUST you would never believe these dunes if you didn't see them in person> . We visited the Wright Memorial and of course played on the beach right outside our resort.

Things that might give city-folk pause:

If you are late, the management leaves your paper work and keys in a simple box outside the office.

People leave shade tents and expensive kayaks on the beach all night. Bicycles unlocked. Doors unlocked. Windows unlocked or unlockable....

    The beach is "open" 24x7.

These are good things but take getting used to.

Other than the ubiquitous "Wings" for beach stuff and Food Lion supermarkets the areas we stayed in and traveled through have managed to keep the chains to a bearable minimum. If you must visit Mickey D's, Outback or Home Depot they do exist but they aren't on every single corner. There are plenty of mom & pop/indie businesses and restaurants to support.

We were lucky enough to stay directly ON the beach and I'll be composing a review shortly.

It is nice to be home but I am already planning on returning to OBX.

Oh, Lawren, sounds wonderful! That is just the sort of place DH & I love to visit. We live in an area of Calif. that has that sort of ambiance, we never lock our doors & have NO chain stores or fast food restaurants. We do like the Marriotts in Ca. even though they are pretty fancy. But the big mega resorts are just not our style. Give me a low-rise, small condo complex, with lots of local stuff to explore & I'm a happy timesharer. I could care less about granite counters or a jetted tub in the master bath but a nice HEATED pool with plenty of lounge chairs and a convienent barbeque grill are a must.

Having grown up in a famous beach town....the beach is not my primary choice for vacation. But OBX is a whole different experience from Pacific Coast so I do want to go someday.

Welcome back. I'm looking forward to your full report.

Sounds like you are having a great time! How are the crowds and traffic this time of the year?

I also love the outer banks. I'd rather go there than Hilton Head. Did you get to try Sam & Omies? Welcome back. shaggy

Surprisingly little traffic except when we left Saturday morning. Even that wasn't awful once we got over the bridge.

No. Unfortunately the evening we had planned on doing that had the only bit of bad weather. One of the reasons for a planned return is to "do" the activities on Roanoke.

I have always liked NC. Spent a lot of time in the state because of work but had never seen the shore areas before this.

I know we don't all have the same tastes, it is what makes us special, but this is a must see location. 76 degree ocean temps in late June....heaven.

                    Lawren,

The Outer Banks sounds wonderful!!! I'm so glad that you, and your family had such a great time. I'm putting it on my list.

We missed you, it's good to have you back!!!

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

I was hooked after going to Atlantic Beach in July 2003.

Then went to KDH at OBBCII in July 05 amd enjoyed that.

The water temperatures are unlike anything outside of the tropics I've ever experienced.

It is always a location I look for now. Surprised you had not been before.

I have never been there yet, but will have to put it on my list of places to get to, although that list is getting quite long.
                        welcome back.

I knew you would love hangliding. I was so scared at first but it was something I always wanted to do and I would do it again.

OBX is different than all the other coastal vacations we have been on,not Myrtle Beach, not HHI not the Florida beach towns. Just something low key with different feeling in each town. Plenty of places to eat that are informal. No fancy timeshares or hotels but enough to see and then of course there are the dolphins. I saw them everyday from the Golden Strand balcony. Glad you had a wonderful time.
