Inexpensive lodging in Charleston SC???

My wife, another couple and myself will be spending night in Charleston
enroute to a week in Hilton Head on 10/26/07. Any recommendations
for relatively inexpensive lodging in downtown Charleston for one night???
Also any suggestions for things to see or do with only 1 day to spend there??? I hope to spend a whole week in Charleston on a future trip.

There seems to be no inexpensive lodging in downtown Charleston. You can find fair nightly rental rates in other areas of Charleston, but not downtown. We are paying $122 a night for Church Street Inn from a timeshare owner and we're happy to get that rate.
