  • Must see in Charleston ?

We'll be going to Charleston next month and staying downtown. What are the must-sees in/around Charleston? Thanks?

    Robin,

Charleston is wonderful! I only spent one full day there thus far, and I can't remember where we dined or anything like "must sees". Just spending a full day of strolling up and down historic avenues, peering behind ornate gates into backyard courtyard gardens, and simply enjoying walks down streets so steeped in history...I could do it for an entire week and never get bored. Make sure to always carry bottled water and stay hydrated...and please, enjoy yourself in majestic Charleston, South Carolina!

      Charleston is the BEST!

We go to Charleston in the spring and fall every year. We have time share with BG and we stay at our resort there, Lodge Alley Inn.

We love the restaurant next to LAI on East Bay, High Cotton. We also love 82 Queens, Noisy Oyster, and Hymans. Walking to the Battery, the market, taking a carriage ride, going to Patriots Point, touring a plantation....are just a few of the things you might want to do.

Hope when you go you can stay a few days so you can enjoy all that makes Charleston so extra special.

          Charleston in Spring Time

We just returned from our trip to Charleston. We stayed at Lodge Ally Inn and had a two bedroom unit that had 3 beds and a sleeper couch, rm 257.
The resort was very nice and a perfect location as far as walking access to restuarants, historic market, the Battery, and the harbor for Sumter tour and ferry. There is a Harris Teeter grocery store walking distance for those flying in and have concern about access to such amentities.
At owner update we were given tickets to Middleton Plantation and a coupon book that had two-for-one discounts.
We drove into Charleston and had Valet parking at the resort. During our 5 1/2 days we use the car once to go out to the Middleton Plantation.
The Plantation was very pretty to walk through, schrubs/trees in full bloom and had working farm that the employees educated you about what the activities were and how they were done. There is a restuarant on the grounds that serves a 3 course meal for 16.95. It was very good food.
My daughter and friend did a horseback ride on the grounds and they enjoyed it.
Walking in downtown, historic Charleston was absolutely a wonderful and peaceful. Granted very tourist driven as well. We walked during morning, afternoon, evening and night and each time was enjoyable as the next. The nighttime walks was very eerie. The night air and the shadowed streets created a spooky setting on it's own without the ghost walk guides.

We went out to Fort Sumter and was worth the trip and found the Park Service guides interesting and extremely helpful to take you back to the importance of the location and history that took place.

The Carriage Ride was a very valuable in learning the hisory about the homes and buildings throughout the downtown district. We took the tour about day four into the trip. We had already walked by the homes that were on the tour- so when listening to the driver/tour guide we could concentrate on the stories and then we went back to the areas after the tour and could appriciate the homes and area so much more.
The restuarants we chose: The Landing (She-Crab soup/Sandwiches), The Noisy Oyster(Seafood Augratin/Fresh fish), The Buckineer(Lobster/Crab legs,Prime Rib,Steak), Charleston Crab Shack, Bocci's(huge portions), and Tommy Condon's(Shepeards Pie and Ruebens).
This trip and location offers so much history and shopping areas- Art Galleries/clothing/antiques/food/guided tours/walking tours/boat rides, trolley access....your simply walking and enjoying very scenic, intoxicating homes/gardens/water front living. There was a House and Garden Tour that was happening for 45.00 pp and retrospectively we shoould have done it.

We also took on a ghost tour. We chose the Voodo/ghost tour. Out of couriosity, we wanted to here some dark side history of Charleston. We visited Blood Alley and Poogans Porch, grave yards and the Mills Hotel- great history and an interesting time. We visited Poogans Porch again in the daytime, next time will I want to have some Peanut butter pie....
What amazed me is that we would find all kinds of nooks and alleys and places of interest each and every time we walked around.
As an adult we loved this town. My teenager -was been there done that whats next...so we went off on our own and her and her friend spent time in the market and relaxed at the resort.
