  • Darned near tried to buy - HILTON HEAD - Cottages at Shipyard - 3BR

I was ready to bid on this unit but we found the listing a little too late to do out homework on the resort. Here is the auction:

3BR South Carolina HILTON HEAD Red Week TIMESHARE Deed - (item 190137208114 end time Aug-06-07 18:30:00 PDT)

It had everything we wanted, 3BR and more space of the kids but we were not real sure if there is enough down in Hilton Head to keep younger kids entertained? I tried to go through tha chat log we had but I never really got a warm fuzzy...

I do know that the Cottages have bike trails to the beach, the unit we were looking at here has three bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms had king sized beds with two twin beds in the 3rd room and a fold out queen sleeper.

I would also assume that this would have traded well if we decided to go RCI as well. So, I am looking for someone to tell me if I made a mistake not buying or did I make the right decision. We are not in an urgent rush to buy but this one was really close to what we wanted. I also was not sure about the 12-hr drive when there are other choices further north that would give us similar room.

Thanks for any advise as to if this was a great or mearly good deal!

There will be others, and the way things are going there may even be better deals to come.

Some would say that August is too late for HHI but as we know, most NE schools do not go back until Labor Day.....still a week 27-32 would probably be the best.

Don't know the resort but after you check it out....set up your search on ebay and wait......it will come to you

About the 12 hour ride - priceline a room going down about 4-5 hours from home so you can arrive at the resort mid to late afternoon.....and coming home, get up and hit the road by 7a.m....you can do it!

Week 33 is what we have and it is perfect as the kids normally have just one week still out of school after we return. To be honest, we will only buy a week 32 or 33 unit.

I have been watching for a 3+BR week 32 or 33 when I found this one at the last minute and I didn't have enough time to do my homework! It was close to perfect if it wasn't so far south. It was the right size and close enough to the beach.

Like Tony said, I have lots of time to find the right deal but boy this was really close to what I have been looking for... and I want to know if this was an oops so next time I will grab it!

          Thanks for the advise...

Just a thought...as the kidlets get older, fall sports generally start 2 weeks before school....my nephew in NJ is starting football camp next Monday 8/13....which is when DD used to start field hockey...so 32/31 could be in your future.

                  Ken,

You will find something else, don't look back. Cheap rentals there, you should do that first.

I love the looks of the Cottages at Shipyard. They are more like houses than condos. We've never stayed there, but we passed them going to condos in back of them.

Ken....I think Glitter has given you some very good advice.

The end of August is not the busiest time in HH. The southern states have already started school. You should be able to rent a timeshare, at a very decent price.

It's best to rent, and see if your family likes the area enough to buy, and if the you like the timeshare. You can go down and check the different locations, and timeshares. Make your decision after you have vacationed in the area.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

We love the HH area (after our first exchange there 5 years ago, we have been returning every summer in Aug.). We also normally look for 3 BR (3 kids + friends), but this year, I have exchanged into 2 units at Seacrest. We found HH to be perfect for everyone---my oldest, (now 17), loves to have the freedom to be on his own. If you are in Shipyard, (we stayed there once in a 3BR at Port O'Call), it is an easy walk/bikeride to Coligny Plaza (lots of shops, restaurants, small movie theatre, etc.). Mini-golf is also nearby. Shipyard has tennis courts, pools, excellent bike trails, and plenty to keep the kids busy, (of course, there is also the ocean). Our unit at POC was huge....plenty of space for everyone to spread out. I'm sure the Cottages are similar.

We also have a 13+ hour drive to HH....and break it up by driving to Charlotte, NC the first day. We have friends in the area, so spend time visiting w/ them; before heading out the next day. That gives us a shorter 4-5 hour drive to HH...and we arrive mid afternoon and can check in. August is definitely less crowded than the earlier summer months---last year, we went over the 4th of July. However, as a previous post mentioned, August is usually when the practices for Fall sports (football, soccer, hockey, etc.) begin, so I think we will only have another year or so before my daughter's hockey participation will force us to alter our month of travel. My oldest son doesn't play a Fall sport, so we've been lucky in that regard.

I would advise you to visit the area.....we were pleasantly surprised by how much we loved it during our first stay. Much more laid-back than Myrtle Beach, not so "commercial". I was afraid the kids would find it "boring"....but there are plenty of activities to keep them busy. Please email me if you have any more questions/concerns.

We are heading to HH later this week....can't wait!
