  • Special activities/Traditions while vacationing

I thought a thread on traditions while vacationing might be fun. I know the saying "to each their own" might be someones reaction, but maybe someone's odd idea would be someones "why I never thought of that!"

One of our family traditions is horseback riding while vacationing.
    Advice:
We will be in Charleston SC in a few weeks. There is so much history there, I found a plantation that offers horseback riding on their premises. The Inn at Middleton Place / Charleston, South Carolina
If anybody has done this or has another option, please let me know.

Some of our HB adventures were in Las Vegas- Red Rock Canyon, Idaho/Montana area- Great Divide ride, Mount Rushmore, SD area, Missouri- Dogwood Canyon and an area between Branson and Ridgedale, Shenandoah VA. Most done while vacationing in our timeshare!!!
Other activities we try to do is kayaking- nonrapid, wine tasting, cheese curd hunting(Wisconsin- not hard to find... though we found cheese curds in TN??), Crab Cake -the best of the best search....

When our son was travelling with us, we would go to minor league baseball games if there was a team close by. We saw more than a few future major leaguers over the years.

jmc. I'm interested to hear what you do in the Charleston area. We are headed there this fall. I need to mix the historical stuff (for me) with enough other stuff (for the mrs.) so that we both have a great time.

        Restaurants

We try not to eat at national chain restaurants, but rather local places when timesharing.

          Charleston trip

          Bigrick,
I will be traveling with two teenagers and my mother. So we have a wide range of interests happening. I have been online saving sites to reference for some ideas. We will definately be doing plantation tours, checking out the Harbour area, Fort Sumnter, and walking as much of the area as possible. I am trying to figure out the islands and what there is to offer other than beach and resturaunts. This will be our first time and have about 5 full days to explore.
I am hoping to eat at some very local places and one place of high interest is Queen's Revenge- I hope it is as interesting as it sounds.Queen Annes Revenge Steak and Seafood Restaurant My daughter is all into the Pirate era.
I will outline our trip at the end of March/early April. I have also read much material from other posts here as well.

          Philsfan,
I think that minor league baseball game is a great idea. We have been going to Bristol TN for 5-6 years now to visit family and just found out about the Cubs having a team in Knoxville. All those timeshare rooms near by and possible baseball fans. Locally, we have the Kane County Cougers and have gone to see them and really enjoyed ourselves. Silverleaf is the only TS around.

Like Nancy we refuse to eat anywhere we can eat at home. I guess one tradition is doing all the touristy stuff and taking a gazillion pics. If there are any waterfalls around we try to go. We like to do & see things you can't at home. shaggy

DH and I like to look at real estate on our vacations. It's fun to know what housing is like and the prices for the region.

Be careful with that, I ended up moving from NJ to Arizona because of it!

With my 20 year plus history of making homemade wine and buying wines for my wine rack, we try to find and visit local wineries. Almost every state has wines, many times they are not far from where we are staying. Sometimes we find a gem, most of the time, not so much. But it is an adventure.

On nearly every vacation near water, we seek out local marinas to see the boats docked. The names that people give boats are soooo inventive! Also, watching the fisherman come in with catches is fascinating. I am hoping we will see some of this in Oahu/Big Island this summer.
