  • Arizona closing more state parks

As with so many states, Arizona is in the tank with budget problems.

As a result, many state parks have been closed or will be closing:

Arizona State Parks Keeps Nine Parks Open. Thirteen will Close.

Arizona State Parks(Phoenix, AZ - January 15, 2010) - The Arizona State Parks Board on January 15 voted to keep nine parks open and close the remaining thirteen State Parks in a phased series of closures starting February 22, 2010 due to six different State Parks funds being swept of $8.6 million. In addition, four parks remain closed due to previous budget reductions.

Parks will be closed in a phased sequence starting on February 22, 2010

So sad for everyone living around there. What do they do with the land once the park is closed - and how do they keep people out of the closed park?

I like Red Rock State Park. I know that they won't have rangers there but are you allowed to walk around in the park? shaggy

No, shaggy, once they are closed, no access is permitted. I am sure it would be a liability issue as well as public services, or littering and other problems. Closure means closed to all public use.

Do we have a list of which ones that are open are worth visiting?

As for "worth visiting", it would be hard for me to make that subjective decision. Each park has a unique offering, and what I may enjoy, you may not, or vice versa.

But I will check into which ones are popular and see if I can get some sort of list going.
