  • Except for some landscaping minor corrections, Sedona HWY 179, is done

Round and round you go from the Village of Oak Creek thru the intersection of Hwy 89A, the years and years of construction comes to a conclusion....they are landscaping medians, and revealing service access areas (manholes and such), doing striping, but in short time, the crews will probably be gone.

For most of them, the roundabouts are small, and do not allow a lot of gaps between long lines of cars, and thus, discourtesy is still an issue, but in general, the traffic moves along. Most confusing roundabouts seem to be at the "former" Y intersection at 89A and 179....there are several lanes at the top of 179, and you have to choose the correct one if you want to go to West Sedona or Uptown...then navigate around the RAB and if you are heading to W.Sed. you are thrust into a second RAB immediately....traffic comes at you from Uptown, and the Post Office, but if you pay attention, you can get by. The RAB are not generous in car lanes, and there are many tire marks on the curbs as people are forced to sharply enter and turn.

This weekend will prove to be a true test....traditionally Labor Day weekend is heavy with traffic....we shall see if the traffic flows or backs up as it usually did.
Life is short, live it with this awareness.

Congrats to Sedona for having some pregressive traffic planning, vs. the standard "stoplight at every corner" thinking! If there aren't many roundabouts in the area, there will be a learning curve so don't expect traffic to flow perfectly the first busy weekend. But in the end, you will have better, safer intersections (with less CO emissions as an added bonus!).

Actually, the last thing a driver in the circle should do is to be "courteous" and let a car jump in, in front of them. That only slows down the whole traffic flow, and can cause a deadlock situation. The best thing you can do is to keep moving in the circle, and when you are entering, learn to "jump in" when there is a gap. Hesitation is the biggest cause of one leg backing up.

The law states that the traffic IN the circle has the right of way. so no, I am not suggesting someone should be coureous in that way, letting someone in, because it would disrupt flow..

However....I am saying that the circles are too small.

When there is a long line of cars on the major north/south feeding into the circle, ...drivers do not slow down as they approach the circle, some even gun it, they do not yield, they just pour into the circle. This does not permit any gaps, because the circle is too small. The cars E/W, on the minor artery have difficulty finding how to join the circle, because the circle is too small.

But we will be patient, and see how it evolves.
