San Antonio Help needed

Well it's almost here. My neice & husband will be with me from Fri to Monday then Kelli & I will be alone.

Neice wants to go to Seaworld, Kelli wants Six Flags, (neice wins) Also plan on going to the Alamo & riverwalk on Sunday. There is also a accordian festival that weekend.

I'm thinking of driving to Banderas or somewhere thereabouts with just Kelli & me. Do I need to spend the night somewhere in that area or just drive back.

I also found a cave & a drive thru animal park that looked interesting.

Any restaurants or activities to visit will be most welcome!!

Staying at Eckart Place.

Hi Shaggy.
You are going to love San Antonio. It's a beautiful city. Unfortunately it's not the most ADA accessible though.

I can't remember the names of the Mexican restaurants but they all seemed to be great. One was in the Villita/Mercado area and has a huge bakery inside the lobby. The other was on the Riverwalk and has beautiful multicolored umbrellas on the tables along the river. I'm sure if you ask in the hotel they will know which ones they are.

Definetely visit the missions. Alamo is the best known but there is a whole mission trail that is a nice outing and free. They also have horse and buggy rides in front of the Alamo.

I went to a two caves and if you like caves they have a nice big one. I'm kinda caved out for now.

Seaworld is huge and if I remember correctly bigger than the one in Orlando. Definetely worth a visit.

Do the river taxi. It's very cheap and they give you a little tour of the Riverwalk from the water level. Makes for a nice ride.

We were just there three weeks ago. We really enjoyed strolling riverwalk; also a tour on the watertaxis. As for restaurants, I would recommend The County Line barbecue either on the riverwalk or one of their other locations. The brisket is wonderful! There are also a number of historic missions in addition to the Alamo. We also enjoyed a trip to Fredricksburg to the WWII war in the pacific museum; they even do re-enactments.

The mexican restaurant on the riverwalk chriskre mentioned is Casa del Rio. I liked the tacos and cheese enchiladas but definitely not the tamales. The cheese enchiladas were bright red, but tasted very good.

Thanks for being my memory. So many wonderful Mexican restaurants and so little time to enjoy them all. I'm sure there are other wonderful lesser known places off the river that are great too.

Didn't do this but did go to the Buckhorn saloon.

We were there during a dermatology convention so it might not be as lively on a regular night but we saw a concert by Esteban and were wined and dined by the drug companies. I do remember some stuffed animals (taxidermy ones not fluffy ones). It's supposed to be the oldest saloon in Texas or something like that. I don't remember too much since the Margaritas were flowing freely that night.

Also go up the observation tower if you have time and it's a clear day.

Shaggy I posted some ideas for you over yonder... Bandera bills itself as the "cowboy capital of the World" however there really isn't much to see or do in Bandera other than a few shops and it kind of has an old west type of feel.

Fredricksburg, Borne and some of the other small towns are more interesting imho.

There is Lady Bird Johnson wildflower park which is great in the spring but not too interesting this time of year, the springs at san marcos is also nice,

I was going to post on this thread, but it suddently dawned on me that it has been almost 40 years ago since I lived in San Antonio and almost 25 since I've visited there. I love the Riverwalk. On time, when visiting, we had meal on a boat on the Riverwalk. That was fun, but I was with a group of people I knew. Don't know how much fun it would be if you were not with a group.

ps. A day trip to Laredo Mexico was something we also did. It is a long drive and not sure of the safety there anymore. If you've been to Mexico, I don't think it is worth it.

Am looking forward to seeing my neice & her husband. Should be fun. She had weight loss surgery and has lost over 200 lbs. can't wait to see what she looks like.

After I hit send I realized that I had one more thing to say. You catch a water taxi like a real taxi by standing along the river and yelling "taxi." I think it is $5 for a single ride and $10 for a day pass. One thing I wish we had had time for was to take the water taxi up through the locks to the new part of the riverwalk near the old brewery.

Nancy--our tour guide said they no longer go to Mexico because of the danger.

Bandera has some fun things like trail rides, and tubing the river. Might be getting cool for that, its only mid 80's next week. It is an easy day trip.
Definitely do the drive through Wildlife Safari, it is a lot of fun, and the animals get very "friendly".
Skip Laredo, it has become far too dangerous.
Sea World is far better than Six Flags.

Restaurants:
Scenic Loop Cafe: has a great patio with live music on the weekends, and a playground for the kids. Very beautiful, relaxing atmosphere. Try "La Tuna" margarita (it's prickly pear, not fish). Might be a little pricey depending on your standards.
Boudro's: on the Riverwalk, great casual dining. You can't go wrong here. Try tableside guacamole, and the prickly pear margarita. (sense a theme here?) pricey, but worth it.
The Cove: featured on Diners, Dives, and Drive -thrus. It is a organic/ local restaurant, as well as a carwash, and laundromat. also has patio and small playground. famous for fish tacos, but I prefer the shrimp tacos, with their fantastic wasabi sauce. also good is lamb burger.
El Chapparral: great Mexican food, with patio and playground. I love cilantro enchiladas. The Helotes location is best, and not too far from your resort.

Taco trucks
Tin Can Tacos: in a vintage Airstream trailer. Manny, the owner/chef is CIA trained, and it shows. I love the lamb tacos, but the burrito is also great. Try his sauces. on Bandera Road, just N of loop 1604. close to your resort
Chela's Tacos: in a bright red horse trailer. Named 1 of 10 best restaurant dishes for 2009 in San Antonio Express News. Some are spicy. I love chicken cilantro taco, just the right amount of spice. they will recommend something you will like, according to your taste. if they say it is spicy, believe them. On UTSA Blvd, just W of IH 10. close to your resort.
