Hooray, we hit the 50% containment mark, and while the winds kicked up big today, the fire lines held, and the firefighters continued to make progress.

Burnout was completed and containment further secured on the southeast part of the fire. On the west side, fire “fell” from the high cliffs onto plateaus in an unnamed canyon. Firefighters are monitoring the progress of those small areas and will determine tomorrow what action is needed based on available access.

Approximately 4.5 miles of fireline remain to be built.

The forecast for Sunday night is a 20 percent chance of widely scattered, dry thunderstorms, with humidity from 32-37 percent.

The extended forecast for Tuesday through Thursday calls for dry thunderstorms each day, with high temperatures throughout the week.

The evacuation order continues for Oak Creek Canyon from Midgely Bridge to the fish hatchery in Sterling Canyon (this includes homes, businesses and Forest Service campgrounds). This affects an estimated 581 residences and 40 commercial properties.

There are two new fires in the Yavapai County area, near Prescott Valley....fire fighters are already battling those blazes.

Life is short, live it with this awareness.

      The containment is now 65%.

Crews continue to work for the next 3.5 miles to secure the containment.

Mop-up crews are coming in tomorrow to continue the next phase of fire fight.

Expectation is that the road will be opened to residents and businesses around 5 PM June 27.

Dry thunderstorms are still a threat this week, but so far, the fire fighters have been fortunate with few winds or strikes.

We may see full containment as predicted for Wed. this week. YAY!

        Katiemack,
Thanks for your updates on the fires out there, we appreciate your keeping us informed, we only get small bits on our news here in NY. So very glad to hear your latest that they seem to be getting it under control and may be heading in to the mopping up phase.
This past May was our first visit to that area and we really liked it a lot. Couldn't believe when we started to hear about the fires a about a week after we were back.
Again all our best wishes are with you and your neighbors. Keep the updates coming and thanks again.

            Yes, 100% contained.

The praise goes to the firefighters....and Mother Nature helped by providing some rain and humidity, calm winds and lower temps.

The homes and businesses are now occupied, and the road only open to those who live and work on 89A in the canyon.

Mop up crews will secure the area from mudslide and rock slides. Once the road is safe, it will be reopened to the public.

Say AMEN! We came close to a major disaster....well done men and women, well done!

Sedona is hoping that monsoon is building for real....skies continue to bring clouds and the hope for rain.

Forest is still closed, but soon, soon with rain...it should be reopened!

Here is a picture of the fire,
The picture is shot from about 4 miles away from the fire's origin.
