  • Silverleaf's Seaside Resort - Galveston TX

Anyone been here? What is your review of the place? This unfortunately is about the only place that I could get into using my RCI exchange. I am almost dreading going here. We are set to arrive in about 2 weeks. Advice/tips on getting a good room? We will be traveling with a toddler. What is the weather like in Galveston in the middle of Feb? I don't want to have to pack my entire closet. After we leave this resort we are going to the Greatwolf Lodge in Grapevine for a day before heading home!

Sorry, but . . . having done Galveston in February once, we would never do it again.

DD lives on the seawall down in galveston and not too far from the seaside resort. It is on the west end of the island.

It sounds like you may be there during mardi gras, MARDI GRAS! GALVESTON - Galveston, Texas and it can be fun but I can only take little bits of it.

We have had a fairly mild winter, it has been getting up in the 60's and 70s.

Why would you never go again in Feb? Because of the weather?

Yes, we are going during Mardi Gras & I am actually very nervous about this....taking a toddler to Mardi Gras but I do see where there are family parades & such. We will be back asleep in our room when the "partying" is going. And I believe we will be far away from the noise. (I hope) I keep checking the weather daily. To see what it's like there & I am in Illinois & we are having a crazy winter. It was 60 yesterday 50 today I think in the 30's tomorrow.

            Yeah.

And we are beach-spoiled, not particularly fond of Galveston. We even have fam with a place there.

We own at Seaside and the units are very nice. Do you have a 6/4 Friday checkin or a Saturday 6/6 unit. Depends on what you confirmed. The 6/6 is a Presidential unit and all the Pres have elevators. These are the larger units The 6/4 Lodge buildings do not have elevators. All the buildings are one level up steps to get the the first floor units. So if you are on the top floor of the Lodge units you would be hiking up 3 flights of steps. Pres Units have 2 king beds and Lodge Units have Master King and Queen in guest bedroom. All units have a jacuzzi in Master. The outside pool is not heated and there is no indoor pool or outside hot tub. There is a nice Putt Putt Course, Tennis Court and BBQ grills (charcoal) by each building. No wifi in the units but there is in the Activity Building. If the weather is nice the beach is right across the street and you can go for long walks or play in the sand. Water will be cold but then again I have seen snowbirds in the water there in December..... but too cold for me. The weather here this month has been very mild and we were up to 78 last week. Be sure to stop at Wal-Mart or Krogers and get groceries before you get to Seaside. There are no large Grocery stores near the resort. Seaside is a ways out going west toward Jamaica Beach just past it. The resort is on the right.

If you have time after MadiGras and it quiets down take a ride around the the downtown area and look for the Tree Sculptures that were made by two artists from downed tree stumps after Hurricane Ike did all it's damage. You can get the exact addresses by searching Galveston Tree Sculptures. There is also a free car ferry that runs across and sometimes you might see dolphins. The Schlitterbaun Waterpark is indoors so that may be open too. Moody Gardens can take a full day or more to go through.

One more thing, since you are travelling with a toddler when you checkin be sure to ask for a safety lock for the front door so that your child will not be able to open the door and get out. A friend of mine who is a SL owner had her greatgrandson open the door and get out while she was still sleeping one morning so since then they have provided these locks but you have to ask for it.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Hop thanks for all the information; we check in on Friday. I am glad to know about the locks. That would be horrible if my daughter was able to open the door. I am planning on using the second bedroom as her room; but we will see how that goes.

I have read so many negative reviews about the place on trip advisor I am almost nervous to go but I always read bad reviews about any place and then once we get there I realize it's not as bad as the reviews state. I would love to get in the building that has an elevator but that is only a minor technical issue. I thought that the units had washer/dryers but I was looking on RCI website the other day & I didn't find where the units had washer/dryer is there a community place somewhere for laundry? I usually like to do a load or two before heading home. We booked this vacation via an RCI exchange so I don't know what to expect when I get there, we usually stay at a Wyndham property. If you can think of any great places we should sight see while there, or any tips I would greatly appreciate it.

Since you have a Friday checkin I am assuming you have a 6/4 confirmation which is the Lodge Unit. This is a 2 bedroom, it is not a lockoff and you will be ok using the 2nd bedroom for your child. Try and ask for a first level unit and you should be ok with the steps. There are no washer/dryer in the Lodge units and there is no laundry facility at the resort. There is a laundramat down the road if you really need to find one. The Presidential Units 6/6 do have a washer/dryer in them but I don't know if they will upgrade you to it. Those are Saturday checkins.

I don't pay too much attention to some of the trip advisor's reviews. Many people that write those negative reviews expect timeshares to be like hotels and expect everything. We go to this resort all the time. Sometimes we stay over and sometimes we just go for day use. We have owned here since 2000 when they first opened up. It is a nice resort. Just wished they had a few more aminities that they promised to put in.

Hop yes our unit is a 6/4 unit. After taking to you I decided to call the resort to see if I could have a lower unit reserved and I asked if I could have one with elevators. I kind of played dumb. Acting like I knew nothing of the Presidential Units vs the lodge units. I was instructed to call back on Thursday and speak with Latoya as she is the RCI concierge; I asked if I could have our check in moved to Saturday. I don't know how prime of a time this is there & I am guessing it is probably booked up with people coming for Mardi Gras but what is the worse they can tell me NO? Right?

Good Luck with upgrading but I know it says on RCI they will not do upgrades. I just checked on bonus availability and there is nothing available for Seaside for that weekend so they are probably booked due to MardiGras. Enjoy your stay and the temps are around 58-60's now so we are little cooler then it has been.

I saw that on RCI too, but I figured that is what the company says and you never know what the individual may say. So I doubt that I will get an upgrade but like I said you never know until you ask. Looks like I will be going to a laundromat before we leave. I've gotten spoiled; every Wyndham unit we've stayed in has had a washer/dryer and its so nice to be able to do a load or two. Plus with a toddler you might NEED to do laundry. Since we are driving 15++ hours we will be going through alot of clothes on our stay.

I know they say "NO" upgrades but doesn't hurt to ask..they want to keep good marks with RCI so you just might get what you want .... What are the dates for Madi Gras?.........

                              Mardi Gras is Feb 10-21

I spoke with the RCI concierge today & I am hopeful that I may get what I want. She was very very nice. Said nothing about having to move my check in day but said she would assign me a presidential if it became available. So my fingers are crossed.
