  • I'm thinking about San Antonio

We like to go different places when we vacation and we are thinking about San Antonio for next year, sometime in the fall. The reviews are gone (at least I can't find them) from RCI and was wondering if any one had any ideas or thoughts as to where to stay or if there is a better time to go. I don't know if they get alot of rain in the fall and I am open to ideas as to what to do.
I already have January and May booked for vacation, so I figured the fall would be a good time to plan to go.

RCI resorts in or close to San Antonio

These are the RCI resorts that are near or in San Antonio. There are also a couple of II resorts in or near San Antonio, such as Fairfield Riverwalk Suites.

Outside of San Antonio (up to 1 hr outside):

The Bandera Homestead (#5011) Perennial Vacation Club at Bandera (#3296)
Silverleaf's Hill Country Resort (#1029) The Summit Vacation Resort Tree Top Villas (#4043) Inverness at New Braunfels (#1497)

    In San Antonio:

Wynnwood Townhomes (#3613) Salado Creek Villas (#6989) Hotel Valencia Riverwalk - Rental (#8239)Shell Vacations Club at Salado Creek Villas (#8554)

The fall is a nice time to visit as the temperature has cooled and the summer crowds are gone. San Antonio is a lot of fun to visit.

thanks, I saw some of the resorts listed in RCI..do you know anything about them? I have tried to read some of the reviews in tripadvisor and TUG, but not having much luck since RCI seems to have removed their reviews and TUG reviews are older. I also tried redweek for reviews, but not much luck there either.
I'm glad the fall is a good time to go

Fall ... in Texas ... surely you jest!

All kidding aside, probably the dates you consider "Fall" in CT is usually the tail end of "Summer" in Texas.

We own a week that fall around Labor Day at Silverleaf Hill Country Resort and it is a little far out if you want to do a lot of activities in San Antonio. The Hill Country of Texas is a very nice area of the state which we enjoy and Silverleaf is a nice resort with a lot of activities on site. The drive will get a little long if most of your attractions are in the city.

          jericap,

It is true that what I consider "fall" is in October to late December. It does cool down. If you are thinking of Labor Day, that is summer and it will most likely be hot!

As to the resorts, I am personally unfamiliar with any of them.

However, the 2 Bandera resorts are actually the same resort, with 2 RCI numbers. I would venture that staying there would be good if you are looking for a relaxing (e.g., quiet) vacation.

New Braunsfel is a quaint Texas German town. It has the Comal River running through it and there is a lot of tubing on the river. It has a large water park called Schlitterbaum which runs along the river and uses the river for some of its water for the park. There is a very nice city park golf course in New Braunsfel that is very reasonably priced.

If you like Texas BBQ, I recommend "Rudy's". It is very good and has many locations around the San Antonio, Austin area. There is one on the way to Bandera, one in New Braunsfel, and I think at least one in San Antonio. Very good; you eat off of pink butcher paper which is a tradition of Central Texas BBQ joints.

Based on the resort names in San Antonio, I would think that the Shell Vacation resort would be nice. The Fairfield resort is on the San Antonio Riverwalk and is a converted historical hotel (it is an II exchange). Most of its rooms are 1 br but it does have some 2 br.

Hopefully, there are other members of TS4MS that have visited some of the resorts in and around San Antonio and can give you more specific information.

I do agree that if you are wanting to do a lot in San Antonio, you should probably stay there instead of one of the outlying resorts.

I was thinking sometime in Mid-Sept through October...maybe even to mid-November...I've heard about the hill counrty of Texas and it sounds great, but I've heard so much about San Antonio, that I think I would like to concentrate my visit to that area first. Texas is a big state and I'm sure there is lots to do.

              jericap,

Mid-September can be and would most likely be pretty hot still. October is much better. November is delightful!

I hope you can make it to San Antonio. We're pretty friendly folks down here.

I booked a 2 BR for next October to Silverleaf's Hill Country Resort. It's in between Austin and San Antonio and it seems as though there is quite a bit to do in the area. An hour's drive isn't that much to me, I drive that 1 way to work so I'm quite used to it.
I look forward to going and I hope that the second week in October isn't that hot..maybe low 80"s..
I hear it has alot of stairs..40-50 average, about 3 stories..not bad for my husband and myself, but my SIL/BIL might have some problems, I will have to see if I could get a lower level.

A Silverleaf 6/6 will most likely be a Presidential which have elevators. The 6/4 will either be a lock-out which will either be parking lot level or 1 story up or down. The other 6/4 possibility are the older condo units which could be be several flights of stairs away from the parking lot.

If your party has mobility problems, call the front desk about 3 weeks out and they might be able to put you in an easy access unit.

Which TS would be the closest one to the Hyatt Texas Hill Country resort that folks would recommend? We're not Hyatt members but will be at a work conference at the hotel part and want to spend extra time. Any idea if putting up a direct exchange request would work well?

It looks like Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch is about a mile away. It looks as though it is affiliated with II and not RCI.

If you end up having trouble getting a place... DAE usually has a private condo that is available through them via exchange - I can't remember the name of it off-hand, but it is a 2bdrm unit in downtown San Antonio. Often the fall San Antonio weeks end up on their sell-off list for a very reasonable price ($99-199 usually) and you can save your RCI deposit for something else.

No idea how nice the unit itself is, perhaps someone there could forward pictures of the unit.

San Antonio exchanges via II are tough in my opinion, but the DAE unit is a gimmie. Good luck!

It looks like RCI's offerings in San Antonio proper are very few and not close to attrations. It looks like 4dabirds advice may be the best.

Thanks Kim for the great info. I couldn't find it on DAE's website but I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if they can track it down.
