  • The Ridge Tahoe

I have this booked for 2014, but am getting worried about altitude sickness. Has anyone stayed at the Ridge Tahoe that can share their experience? It looks like a really nice property and relatively easy to drive to the nearby areas that we want to look at, but if it's too high up, maybe I should cancel it and look for something lower.

some suffer from altitude sickness and some don't. I have gone to several high altitude locations and not had any problems while traveling companions have.

If you do get it you will be miserable.

I have not figured out who is effected or why. The only way to find out is to go I guess.

The Ridge at Tahoe is a little over 6,000ft. If you have been in an airplane or above 6,000ft, I would not worry about it. Just take it easy for a day or so to get used to the altitude. I have a breathing problem but when I was on Maui at 10,000ft at the volcano I got short of breath, but no altitude sicknees. Just relax and look forward to being at Lake Tahoe.
      Good Luck,

That's good to know! We've had a few issues with camping around 5,000ft, but nothing that an inhaler wouldn't fix or a day or 2 of resting. I just didn't want to get the type I read about where people can't walk anywhere. I wasn't planning on going to Tahoe to sit in my room! The resort looks like the type of place that we would be out walking around, doing activities most of the time.

I have been in many high altitude locations including Lake Tahoe. Actually 6,000' isn't very high. The main thing is to take it easy and don't do anything that is very strenuous. Several years ago, I made the mistake of racing my son up a flight of stair at the top of Mt San Jacinto near Palm Springs. I got a splitting headache that lasted for 3 days. That was at over 8,000 feet.

We have been to the Ridge Pointe at Tahoe and did lots of hiking and cycling. A lot depends on your health condition. In any case, I would recommend at least a day at the altitude before strenuous activity. Alcohol also has an effect and can magnify the result.

I have terrible altitude sickness and was reasonably ok there. Chose the area because of the relatively low altitude for world class snow conditions.

I've also stayed there. A summer stay. We enjoyed the resort and the surrounding area very much. Apparently none of us suffer from altitude sickness because it wasn't an issue. My kids used to travel to Big Bear for sporting events..recreational and school related. Cross Country running was always a concern-but they never had a problem with the altitude while others did. Go figure. We also hiked a trail that started at the base of Olympic Village. Not a problem. Our favorite activity was probably rafting the Truckee River. It was really a float...really easy and a great way to spend an afternoon. The other highlight was finding a bear in the parking garage at The Ridge!!

The resort itself can be a little "hilly" depending upon which building you are placed-but if I remember correctly-they also have a little shuttle. In addition, there are shuttles to take you "in to town" We never used those as we had our car and were out and about on our own. I'd stay there again.

Tahoe really is not at high enough elevation to make most people 'altitude sick.' That's why we've been there

I have same problem but only time it hit me was our last vacation in Colorado on Pikes Peak. Even in Colorado Springs I was fine. We have owned at the Ridge for years and go every fourth of July and never had a problem.
Its a beautiful resort and you will have a ball.

We are in Avon, Colorado this week from Chicago. Elevation here is 7400 feet, versus our 500 at home. My wife and kids have been fine. I've had a bit of a headache a little shortness of breath, but its clearing up today. We arrived yesterday early morning in Denver, kicked around there during the day, and then came up. I made no real plans for the first couple of days, just so we could acclimate.

Would a fall or a spring season be a better time to visit this resort ?

                          Not sure what the reason your asking best time to be in Lake Tahoe? We have been going up for summer for more than fifty years and one of our units the Naegles were for summer only. Our Tower is prime but again we take summer unless renting it out then we take Presidents week{skiing}

We have been to Lake Tahoe several times. The fall and spring is definitely not a better time. The weather will be too cold for outdoor activities and not good for skiing unless they get a really long winter which does happen some times.

Lake Tahoe is either a summer or winter area but not fall nor spring.
