  • Update on traffic for holiday season in Sedona

Well, the Highway 179 project is in full swing, and it has had many bumps and fits as it evolves.

Here is a quick summary of the details I give in this thread:
    1) road work on Hwy 179 is making it a challenge and there have been accidents ....the chamber of commerce doesn't want it reported in the local news, so it won't be.

    2) if it is dark, it is poor visibility: hard on driver and passenger to navigate the road thru the Village of Oak Creek.

    3) the city of Sedona is not experiencing this problem, and if you arrive via Hwy 260 to Hwy 89A you will avoid the mess in Village of Oak Creek

    4) The only timeshare resort that is located in the Village is the Ridge, a Sunterra resort. Villas of Poco Diablo, tho on Hwy 179, is much closer to Hwy 89 A....you can get to it via the detour of Hwy 260 to 89a easily.

Here is the full detailed version:

The Village of Oak Creek is most impacted by the construction, as is the Back of Beyond intersection (this is a stretch of road north of Bell Rock, and south of Chapel Road, near the Methodist Church.

Accidents are being kept out of the news....but they are happening, as the visibility is difficult.

There are 3 roundabouts being worked on in the first stage of construction: one at the Hilton/Sedona Ridge turnoff just south of the factory outlets in Village of OC.

The second is at the factory outlets, at Jacks Canyon Rd.

The third is at Back of Beyond.

And there is talk that a fourth is also in the works at this time, at Bell Rock Blvd (the turn near Bell Rock that leads to the Golf Course...Village of Oak Creek course).

The roads have been torn up and traffic is pushed to the western side of the VOC length....

there are concrete barriers along the east side, and the construction on the east side is hard to figure out....drainage ditches, raised levels of dirt, many different mini-projects behind those barriers.

There is a very low level of lighting along this stretch, and the signage is pretty useless.

It doesn't help a person to find a business when all the sign says is "business access"...and there are no helpful signs for detouring nor are there clear street signs easily spotted from the confusing roadway.

If someone is not familiar with the area, they will have some difficulty finding a certain street or restaurant in the Village.

In Sedona city, there is nothing quite like this going on ....yet.

Although, the uptown area has had a project which has had many a delay, and there are some new projects expected. There are a few unhappy folks in uptown with the sidewalk/bridge project under way.

But as far as traffic in Sedona city....no real serious problems.

I still recommend coming into Sedona thru Hwy 89A via exit for HWY 260, north thru Cottonwood ....especially if you drive into Sedona for the very first time at night.

The only reason to come in thru HWY 179 is that you :
    a) are staying at a resort or hotel in the Village of Oak Creek ,
    b) know the area very well and don't mind dealing with concrete barriers and broken roads, or c) you are driving in the daylight and can clearly find your way thru the mess.

The construction chief has made a plan to control traffic snarls, and so far, I haven't been impressed with the folks who direct the traffic....they use mixed hand signals, and they are not trained in taking control.

Final word of caution, there is a huge Forest Service project also going on about 2 miles south of the Village, and that adds dust, dirt, huge trucks and unexpected stoppage of traffic, during the day. Also, road has been reconfigured, concrete barriers there, and in the dark, it is quite dark....not fun.

If you are staying at the city resorts, it is my best advice, especially if you are a first timer to Sedona....come in thru exit 285, HWY 260 north thru Cottonwood to HWY 89A to Sedona (that is make a right at the Home Depot/Giant Gas intersection).

If you come into Sedona thru Hwy 179, do be alert especially thru the stretch at about 4 miles off Interstate 17 for about another 10 miles until you pass the Back of Beyond mess, uh, project.

    Stay safe! Enjoy your visit!

      Thanks

      KatieMack,

Thanks so much for your "travel advisories". I came in from Cottonwood over Thanksgiving and it was a nice easy ride. I went back through the construction zone figuring it wouldn't be as bad traffic wise. I was right, not alot of traffic.

But you're right, there is very little signage, very dark and you have to be careful about your speed going this way.

      Sedona is gorgeous.

Again thanks for sharing with the rest of us.

        Route from Flagstaff

        Katiemack,

I'll be coming from Flagstaff to Sedona on 12/26. What's your recommendation on the route?

I am glad I can be of any help!

That was a wise estimate of the traffic flow, VVTrader! The problems tend to be the incoming or northbound traffic into Sedona, rather than the traffic coming out of Sedona thru the Village of Oak Creek.

Jaybee, you will have a great visit at the Villas of Sedona....the renovations are terrific!

Mike, I have sent you a PM with some hints on the trip from Flagstaff to Sedona. Generally, if you can stand curving twisting narrow roadway, and are driving in dry daylight conditions, you might find taking 89A south, along the creek to be the best entry into the Uptown area (where Arroyo Roble is located.) If it is icy/dark/snowy...I would stick to Interstate 17, and be sure to drive with caution, no matter how many cowboys try to encourage you to drive fast in snow....the curves can get you! especially if it is winter conditions...

On that note, however, right now the forecast is looking pretty good, and we have had a milder season than usual....warmer days and nights....very little precip....so for visitors to the Northern AZ area, you might find it very welcoming conditions!

It's going to be a long long time...

              Hi, Anne,
The project has two phases and is expected to be fully completed in no less than 3 years from what I have heard. Phase one focuses on HWY 179 from just south of the Village of Oak Creek up thru Back of Beyond....Phase 2 focuses on BOB to Uptown.

The construction schedule can be found HERE

From the website www.scenic179.com , here is the construction update for Dec. 18 week:

What to watch for, week of December 18:
South of the Village of Oak Creek, motorists will notice construction of a retaining wall on the east side of the road, and, further north, work on the storm drain system. There may be minor traffic impacts such as shoulder closures or construction vehicles needing access to the road, or lane closures of short durations with flaggers/DPS present.
Jacks Canyon Road is closed between SR 179 and Cortez for storm drain work and will be closed until approximately the end of January due to unforeseen utility conflicts. Drivers using detour routes must obey speed limits. Tickets are being issued in residential areas where detour traffic has been traveling at higher than posted speeds. We appreciate everyone’s patience during this phase.
Throughout the Village of Oak Creek, the construction work zone has been secured behind concrete barrier and existing sidewalks, asphalt, curb and gutter, etc. are being removed. One lane of traffic continues to flow in each direction. Watch for blue “business access” signs to guide you, and please drive with care through the area.
Work on a new bridge in the forest segment is ongoing near milepost 309.5, and there may be lane closures of short durations with flaggers/DPS present. The HT Trail will be closed until Spring 2007, also associated with construction of a new bridge.
Storm drain work will continue at Back O Beyond, where traffic has shifted to the west side of the road. Temporary concrete barrier is installed to help traffic flow. There may be intermittent lane closures with flaggers/DPS present.

I booked a week for friends at Sedona Summit with a check-in on 1/5/07. Being totally clueless about that area myself, is there anything in particular I should alert them to?

                  Thanks!

                    Hi, Cindy,

Sedona Summit is on the western edge of Sedona, and the best and least hassling way to get there would be for your friends to take the HWY 260 (Cottonwood exit) off of I-17, I believe it is exit 285...they would drive 260 north to HWY 89A, making a right at the Home Depot/Giant intersection.

Driving in that way, they will be arriving into West Sedona, and the resort is on their left just near the Red Rock High School (which will be on their right as they approach Sedona). If they drive too fast they could miss the turn into Sedona Summit....if they find themselves near Dry Creek Rd (on their left), then they have definitely passed the resort entrance, and will need to turn back. Hope this helps.

Another alert you might want to give them is to check the forecast and make sure there is no precipitation expected during their drive up from PHX (if they are driving that way)....as one climbs up the elevation, if there is precip, it could mean tougher conditions.

We were in Sedona January 4-7 and the construction was going strong on the east side of the highway all up through the Village of Oak Creek. Traffic was backed up and the businesses on that side of the street were really hurting...

It has certainly been a "fluid" and changing scene. The construction crews have been told to keep traffic moving, to keep alert to jams....but this is easier said than done. So, as WC said: "you pays your money, you takes your chances"....if you come into Sedona thru HWY 179 during the hours of construction, you just don't know if it will be moving well, moving okay, or in a snarl.

If you are traveling from PHX on HWY 17---I still think coming in from HWY 260 thru Cottonwood is the best access to Sedona city, as I described earlier.

Only caveat to this is that if you are staying at the Ridge, you just have to deal with HWY 179, so come in thru that access point.
