  • Monarch Grand Vacation - Cancun Resort Construction

Has anyone been by this resort recently? I have made an exchange for my son and DIL and am concerned about construction noise and the time it will take them to get back and forth from the strip - any info on the resort appreciated. We have driven by (about 4 years ago) and it looked nice but have not been there.

    Not impressed

The Cancun was the first LV resort we stayed at about 4 years ago. We then moved to the FF Grand Desert for a second week on that trip. The difference was incredible. About the only thing Cancun had that was better was the pool area BUT 3/4 of it was closed until after 4/15. The one pool that was open had strict hours of 11am to 6 pm and they meant it - the gates were locked at 6PM.

Overall the Cancun didn't live up to what we expected in a top resort. We traded a (dual affiliated) RCI Gold Crown for this resort as it was a 5 Star II rated. What a joke! The furnishings were junk, the unit (a 2BR) had no laundry facilities (there were shared ones in the hall), we weren't impressed with the look of the unit and it was rather small. And it was almost new. What it must be with a few years of use I hate to think about.

Plus the resort was at least 20 minutes from the strip - longer when there was any traffic at all - and very little close by so you ended up driving for anything you wanted to do. The gift shop/convenience store that apparently had been in the lobby at one time was closed. It just didn't live up to what we expected at a top rated resort.

Once we hit Grand Desert everything changed. The room was excellent and we only had the 1BR. The resort was in the center of everything - we only took the car out twice all week. The quality was absolutely Gold Crown. And it's improved since as they've opened more buildings and a bigger lobby.

No comparison. It's a Motel 6 vs Hilton type difference. We actually prefer the Hilton Garden Inn to the Cancun if we stay off the strip.

We wouldn't avoid the Cancun but it sure isn't a top choice.

I agree! The kitchen was a joke. They never came to fix the broken screen on the balcony door the whole week we were there and we reported it the first day. I don't know how II can rate it 5*.

ugh! - that's disappointing to hear... I had expected more - it looks fairly nice and the TUG reviews weren't bad... we may need to keep looking for another last minute - I'd love to get Fairfield, but not too hopeful. We like HGVC for offstrip (near the Hilton) so thought this might be ok also - now I'm worried.

          Cancun isn't a pit but it's no 5 Star

Don't be TOO quick to give up on it. I've never stayed at HGVC so I can't comment on that but I know I'd take Cancun over Carriage House, Jockey Club, the current Summerbay or Polo Towers despite the "better" location they all have compared to Cancun. None of them are anything close to Cancun in age or overall quality but Cancun falls short to others like Fairfield and Marriott which I know are better. Someplace is always better no matter where you stay so be aware of what your minimum requirements are for location and quality and then choose your resort from the best that meet at least that minimum. I'd bet HGVC is far better than Cancun which would mean its head and shoulders above the others. There are top quality resorts, the so-so and the "I'll never stay there again" ones. Starting at so-so you may want to at least consider it as a possibility if nothing else is out there. Carriage House and the others I put in the "never again" category (based on what they were when I stayed - they could have been improved or deteriorated more - who knows?).
