  • Sedona ? for Katiemack

Katiemack, I heard that 89 is closed due to a landslide. We are coming to Sedona on 3/10 and need to drive from Phoenix airport.

Will this be corrected by then or do we need an alternate route.

    Thanks,

    Anne

Interested, too. My wife and daughter & her family are coming the week of March 9, 2007. Also, what is the best route now to Flagstaff?

I believe the road was closed in Oak Creek Canyon on President's Day due to the landslide, but I think it is open once again....if you are coming from PHX, this road is not going to affect your driving into Sedona.

As for coming from Flagstaff, if the weather is dry, 89A is still more direct into Uptown from Flagstaff...if the weather is wet or snowy, probably safer to take HWY 17 (relatively safer) ....take HWY 179 exit 298, hope for the best with the construction, and drive into Sedona.

Coming from PHX, I still think HWY 260 is better for getting into West Sedona, or Sedona proper during the heavy traffic times on weekends or during night driving....the construction on 179 is so unpredictable, having sometimes a 3 mile backup before entering into the Village of Oak Creek, to just routine stop and go for construction efforts.

But at night, the unfamiliarity of the road, coupled with concrete barriers, blinking lights, changing in lane formations...Hwy 260 would be a less stressful drive into Sedona.

If you are going to the Ridge in the Village of Oak Creek on HWY 179, you should use HWY 179 exit.

From Sedona, meaning Uptown or West Sedona, if the weather is good, dry, no ice or snow, the 89A switchbacks (just above uptown) link you to Flagstaff, take Humphreys Rd (a left off Rte 66) and follow it to South Rim, Grand Canyon thru Tusayan. Or take 89A thru Flagstaff and go in to GC thru the East Rim.

If you don't mind dealing with the construction, take 179 South to Hwy 17, head north to Flagstaff....Hwy 17 ends (or spills into) Flagstaff and you drive the road until just past the RR trestle, look for Humphreys Rd. and turn left. Follow to South Rim.

Okay, I have more current news regarding 89A in Oak Creek Canyon....the road has been closed for more than a slide....it seems there is a section of road that is being repaired along with a retaining wall....ADOT is hoping to complete it by Mar 9, but the road damage may be worse than first thought...and now there is rumor that the road is going to be closed longer, past Mar 9.

This means anyone hoping to drive into Oak Creek Canyon (Slide Rock State Park is up there) or to use the road to get to Flagstaff cannot do so at this time.

So, that means folks who wish to get to Flagstaff are forced to either use Hwy 179 (where the construction is getting really interesting) to hook into I-17, or they can add miles to their trip by heading South on 89A to Cottonwood, to meet the interstate via Hwy 260 to I-17, then head north to Flagstaff.

Will try to keep you all informed!

Is there any other way to go north than back tracking to the Interstate? Or are those roads bad and/or out of the way?

Riverdees, unfortunately, there are only 2 options out of Sedona...89A or 179 to Hwy 17.

By the way, Villas units....only have some views from upstairs level...recommendation is to ask for units near the barbeques (as someone else has mentioned.) It really won't be of that much concern, as once you get to Sedona, you won't be in the unit that much anyway! They do have differing configurations, as it was a failed condo development....but the differences are slight in terms of size and layout.

                    Adot

Is there a number and/or website that we can use to contact ADOT to see if it is still closed or open. Will be going to Grand Canyon on March 14 and coming back on March 15 from Sedona, weather permitting.

Today the report is that the road of 89A will reopen on Mar 6....but this is anybody's guess....the phone number listed on adot seems to be an error, so I will let you know if I find one that is right. Gee, imagine that....the wrong number listed on their site....wonder why?

                          hotflash,
thanks for the links...the 800 number is apparently only for info regarding 179 project. I can advise that the website is not kept as accurately as the conditions that exist on 179....they do not revise in a timely manner. But it is helpful to give some general info.

As for Oak Creek Canyon 89A...I hope it is open today...haven't heard it was.
