  • South Padre Island TS resorts

Last week I was at a seminar for a couple days on South Padre Island, Texas and had some spare time to drive around the island and locate and view some of the various timeshare properties on the island. Here are my thoughts and observations.

First, South Padre Island pretty much runs north to south. On the east side of the island is the Gulf of Mexico. On the west side, is the Laguna Madre, a type of bay. While I was there the water in both the Gulf and Laguna Madre were really beautiful, a light bluish green color. The beaches on the Gulf side are a light amber color and clean. In Texas, all beaches are public. There are no private beaches.

Timeshares right on the Gulf of Mexico beach:
    • Peninsula Island Resort and Spa (PIU) II 5 Star [this is the newest of all resorts, built in the last 3 or 4 years]
    • Royal Beach & Tennis Club (SAR and 4309) VRI resort
    • Inverness at South Padre Island (0852) (also known as Destinations at Inverness at South Padre Island 7869)

    Timeshares on Laguna Madre:
    • Galleon Bay Club (1079); it looks to have a marina connected to it.

Timeshares in between Gulf of Mexico and Laguna Madre:
    • Sweetwater at South Padre Island (0490) [maybe now known as Sunchase at South Padre Island, it was an ORE resort, now VRI and this is the name of it on VRI's website.]
    • Seascape Condominiums (1103)

The way you get onto South Padre Island is over a long bridge from the town of Port Isabel. When you reach the island, you are on the south end of the island. The Peninsula and Royal resorts are very close to the entry onto the island from the bridge. The Inverness resort is at the northern part of the town. All other resorts are somewhat in the middle of the town.

The highway that goes through South Padre Island continues for another 7 miles north where it ends. You can get access to the beach by car/truck after that but you are in a very undeveloped area and you have to watch the tides at some places if you drive up the beach because you may get trapped from coming back until the tide recedes.

The island has really developed with shopping and restaurants over the last few years. It is pretty much a dedicated beach town, with your usual beach shops. But its shopping has expanded into other upper scale shopping. There are a lot of restaurants to choose from.

The main reasons to stay here on the island is the warm weather year round, fishing, relaxing on the beach. Some of the resorts have more activities than others. The older resorts are more stay and sleep resorts that anything else.

Supposedly there is a local ordinance that bans ties and socks. It is a very relaxing place that would be a nice getaway for someone looking to get away from cold weather. The local cost of living is very reasonable and the local citizenry is very friendly. Mexico is probably an hour away at Brownsville.

Ranking of resorts if I were to exchange into South Padre Island:
    1. Peninsula Island Resort
    2. Royal Beach & Tennis Resort
    3. Inverness at South Padre Island

Thanks for the update Mike. We tend to not take advantage of the opportunities here in our own state. I haven't been to Padre since I was a kid. I'll keep this in mind next time we want an inexpensive getaway.

If you can get into Peninsula Island, it is really really nice. I searched on II for the next year and didn't see any.

Here's a link to its website:

      .:Peninsula Island Resort & Spa:.

They have some very nice rooms.

I just bought one at Inverness at south padre. I have not seen it or been there. It was just one of thoes deals I could not pass up. We like to travel for Thanksgiving and it is flexable to work every year if we want to go.

Is it a nice place? I have read reviews that were good but not great. We stay in Florida on the beach and I figured it would be similar to thoes.

          Hounddog,

Inverness at South Padre is literally on the beach. It's a tall building. Has its own pool on the 2nd or 3rd level. Parking is the first 2 or 3 levels.

The beach and water at South Padre is very nice, not at all like Galveston. Depending on where in Florida you "beach", it is as good as some, but it is not like Destin's white beaches.

I've never been to either place. I take it that you are saying the beach and water at Galveston leave something to be desired, Mike? Do people go to Galveston for vacations anyway?

Since I live about 20 miles from Galveston, I can answer that one: YES!
The northern Gulf Coast is the armpit of the coast. The water is ugly brown and as dense as coffee. I can't understand why anyone would ever want to play in it.

However, there are other reasons to visit Galveston. The historic Strand district is very nice, as well as other fabulous historic homes and buildings, the seafood is great, of course, if you're a northerner, the warm climate would be an attraction, you're only 30 minutes from Houston with all it has to offer, etc. Now don't get me wrong, I can still enjoy a stroll on a beach in Galveston, and I love the sound of the surf no matter where I am, but as for the water? YUCK!

The further down the Texas coast you go, the clearer the water becomes. I grew up in Corpus Christi, so was used to Padre Island, Mustang Island, etc., where the water was green and murky. My husband, being from this area, freaked out the first time he saw the water there and couldn't believe how much prettier it was than Galveston, which was all he had ever seen. Then we went to South Padre. WOW! The water was blue! The water was clear! We could see our toes! Now, since then we've been to the Caribbean and were totally blown away, but South Padre is a very close second.

This is as they say, JMHO, but that's really all any of us offer on discussion boards, right?

Galveston's water can be nice at times. However, the Mississippi River delta flows south towards Galveston. That's why the water can be less than clear. As opposed to the Florida panhandle which sits above the delta flow and therefore is much nicer clear water.

Galveston's beaches are dark sand, much like Atlantic beaches, Myrtle Beach. The S Padre beaches are a beautiful light amber color. IMO, nothing is as good as the white beaches in Destin and other Florida white beaches.

Thanks for all of the information on Texas beaches. I've never been there, but it's definitely on my list of places to go! I didn't realize at all that the beaches there varied so much. I tend to really like clear water, so maybe South Padre Island should be the first Texas beach area that I try out.

We stay at St.Pete Beach where the sand is white and water is light green. I look forward to the blue waters. Love the white sand but love the blue water better.
