  • El Paso, TX - Mexico

How is Mexico next to El Paso, TX? My wife and Daughter are making a New Mexico trip and flying into El Paso and will have some time on the day they arrive since they are staying in El Paso for a half of day and night.

Please be aware that American car insurance will NOT cover your car (be it a personal or rental) in Mexico. Many rental car companies will not allow you to take their cars across the border. You will need to park and walk or buy Mexican car insurance before crossing. IF you travel with any guns or ammo, make doubly sure there is nothing like that, including knives, in your car or you may see more of a Mexican jail than you would ever want! Also, be aware that you have NO rights as an American citizen in Mexico. The last time we went across the border (we live in Arizona--hubby grew up about 3 blocks from the border) there were 18 year old Federales standing on the corners with some nasty looking guns. We had our 16 year old daughter and her friend with us. One of the Federales started following us and that's when it hit me that we had not way of protecting the girls! The Federales could say they were shop lifting and we had no rights. I slipped back and smiled at him--he grinned at me and thankfully left. We have not been back to Mexico! Thousands of American tourists visit Mexico every month and do fine but please be careful--prisons are nasty, and the "payola" to get you out may cost your home, savings and a whole lot more. Local newspapers and TV news here report on murders, rapes, robberies, beatings fairly often. Our neighbor was robbed at gunpoint by a taxi driver and I could go on and on. Be careful and if you feel somethings not right, leave!

I grew up in El Paso. If you havent gone yet, you are better off just parking at the Santa Fe bridge in Downtown El paso....You will see signs that say Juarez Mexico. So park at the Santa Fe bridge and walk across. If you just walk straight ahead you will be in the tourist area if thats what you want to call it. They have all kinds of shopping there etc.... Be sure to haggle with them. Be safe and enjoy!! I have never had any problems.
