  • Sedona short term rentals

Not sure if this applies to timeshare rentals or not.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hello Friends!

Thank you for taking a moment to read this email. I promise you it is not a solicitation, but rather a call for your help.

At some point in the past you chose to stay in a rental home with Foothills Property Management, Inc. during your vacation in Sedona. I greatly appreciate that and can only assume that Sedona touched your heart. How could it not?

Perhaps staying in a vacation home is your chosen method of accommodation in all of your travels. It certainly fills a great need in Sedona. And that is the reason I am writing to you at this time.

The city of Sedona has a rather unfriendly attitude toward short-term vacation rentals and in fact, it is a city ordinance that rentals cannot be less than 30 days. They have been lenient over the years.

Our company has band together with a group of wonderful people who are trying their best to work cooperatively with the city to change this ordinance to one that makes weekly rentals legal.

The next city council work session to discuss this matter will be held on September 26th, 2007. I am hoping you will help us by taking one or two minutes to write a note to Sedona city council members expressing your desire to see these changes made. Please do not use our company name or the address of the home you stayed in. A simple sentence or two explaining that staying in a home is the only way you like to travel, or suits your needs better than the alternate choices available would be perfect. Please include why you come to Sedona.

Here is a link that will allow you to send an email to all council members.

Send a message to all of our City Council members.

If this link does not work for you, please use:

    City of Sedona official website

and look for the link under the council photo.

It will send a very powerful message to the council if they receive many, many, emails from people like you who have enjoyed Sedona, spent many dollars here, and will likely make a return visit. With help from you there is a greater chance you will be able to rent a lovely vacation home here again in the future.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.

    Best regards,

    Tawnia Funk, Broker

    Foothills Property Management, Inc.

Riverdees, it doesn't apply to timeshares...this is a war that is ongoing within Sedona city limits....neighbors are really getting fed up with short term rentals, because the damage to a neighborhood can be very difficult to recover from....there have been one week rentals where a house turns into party houses, in quiet streets....Very often, the folks who own the homes are doing it as investments, they don't even live in the area....and the neighbors of these "short term renters" find themselves hearing music at all hours, cars coming and going, and the neighborhood becomes uneasy.

The intent of the 30 day limit is to reduce the risk to neighborhoods.

The realty company that wrote this letter doesn't give a damn...they want $$, and they don't care if there is bad feelings that come from the rentals.

Sedona is a unique community, with many pockets of differing neighborhoods....to have a party house in the midst of a quiet block of long time residents is extremely disheartening to people who live and work in the community.

I have to find the phrase "Sedona touched your heart" pretty funny. These rental agents are seeking faster bucks, and really put the idea of having a heart pretty far in the background.

I have a friend who suffered from the ill effects of a "lenient" policy just this past year, on his block....the cops had to come, damage was done to others properties....sad but true. Foothills gets their money, their deposit, and the owner gets his rental $$$, but the neighborhood gets hurt.
Life is short, live it with this awareness.

As someone who owns timeshare in Sedona who has found reason to try to rent out my timeshare week, I guess I would be rooting for sedona to not allow these short term rentals. Just for the reduced competition. But I can see why people would be upset that some government entity would try to tell them what they can or cant do with their own property.

Sedona is not the only tourist area that is trying to close down private homes being rented out by the day or week. As of about March, 2008, if my memory serves me correctly, the Island of Kauai also has started cracking down on this type of rentals. As you mentioned, this campaign is partly due to consideration of neighborhoods who have a continuous flow of tourists coming and going, some who are respectful of locals and some who couldn't care less. Many of these owners also have not paid Hawaii state taxes as a rental property (that's probably the main reason Hawaii is cracking down <vbg>). For the most part, Kauai locals are reacting in a postive way and agree with the stand the State is taking--as you mentioned about Sedona, a majority of these "vacation homes" do not live on Kauai or in the State of Hawaii. When we were on island for three weeks this summer, Kauai announced closing down a chunk of the North Shore area to vacation home rentals. I wouldn't be surprised, and can understand why locals would agree, if Sedona does the same.
