Many people who visit Sedona take the Interstate 17 to Highway 179 and drive into Sedona via the Village of Oak Creek, past Bell Rock and the Chapel of the Holy Cross and up to 89A.
Beginning next week some construction will make 179 a bit tricky at night.
Feb. 20 - Feb. 23 Single lane closures will occur at night on SR 179 at Back O’ Beyond beginning Monday, Feb. 20, through Thursday, Feb. 23, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. For the safety of all concerned, crews will be utilizing a Pilot Car to monitor and maintain traffic flow.
This is the beginning of a long time of construction as the Highway is being prepared for a major renovation.
Anyone who will be visiting Sedona will want to know that the expected start time for the major construction is around June 2006.
The Highway will be done in two phases: From the Village of Oak Creek up to Back o Beyond in Phase 1; and from Back o Beyond into the Y intersection of the town is Phase 2.
They are talking about this project fouling up traffic for over a year. If you are planning a trip to Sedona, you will want to find your way into Sedona from Highway 260 through Cottonwood, up to Highway 89 A and in through the West side of Sedona.
All the resorts in Sedona proper can be found from that direction: this includes: Arroyo Roble, Los Abrigados, The Summit, Hyatt, Villas of Sedona, Fairfield, and Sedona Springs.
For the Ridge, your best approach will still be from Highway 179.
If you have to get to Los Abrigados or Arroyo Roble or Hyatt, even though they are close to the Y intersection, you might want to avoid the traffic on Highway 179. The rumor is that traffic will have to plan for 1/2 hour delays as a regular course.
There is another roundabout way, off Highway 179 that loops through Cornville, but if you are travelling from Phoenix, your best bet is to get off at the exit for Highway 260 into Cottonwood.
This is just a heads up for those of you who will be heading to Sedona this summer.
