  • Back from Las Vegas - observations

My wife and I just got back yesterday from a one week stay in Las Vegas. We stayed Thursday and Friday nights at the Silverton and Saturday through Wednesday night at the Paris. We went to Las Vegas to be with our son who was there on a recruiting trip at a soccer tournament. He stayed with us. It was great being able to spend some time with him.

    Silverton:

The Silverton used to be one of our favorites, I am a serious VP player and they had plenty of full pay VP machines including a bank of Bob Dancer Approved multi-game full pay VP Machines. Well, they are all gone now. They told me that Bob Dancer just came in and removed his machines and they haven't heard from him since. They now don't have any full pay VP Machines. In fact they are no better than what you find on the strip. They have also fired 100 employees. We tried their buffet which used to be highly rated and it was one of the worst we have been to. Needless to say, that was our last time we will visit the Silverton. It is a shame as it used to be very good.

    The Paris:

We stayed in one of newly renovated rooms on the 30th floor facing the strip. We had a head on view of the Bellagio water show, pool, and Eiffel tower, The room was very nice with a large flat screen HD plasma TV. The service at the Paris was superb. We couldn't have asked for anything better. After trying a few machines, I was able to find a couple slot machines that were very hot. In fact one of them paid me consistently throughout the whole stay. I have always found that the Flamingo, Harrah's, Paris etc generally have pretty tight machines but they do have some loose ones if you are lucky enough to find them. I play a lot of different ones so I usually come across the loose ones sooner or later. Fortunately at the Paris, it was sooner. We will definitely stay at the Paris the next time we visit.

    Show:

We took our son to see Jubilee at Bally's. We had seen Jubilee 3 times a few years ago. The show has changed a great deal and is much more elaborate now. We had great seats in a center booth at the floor level. The show was awesome and is still our favorite show in Las Vegas.

    General:

Several of the employees and taxi drivers told us that business in Las Vegas is a way down now. They said it started to drop last July. I can't verify that as it looked much the same as usual to me. The Paris was packed on Saturday - Monday though most of people were just walking somewhere. The slot machines were not that busy and I had no trouble getting whatever machines I wanted at anytime. That has been a trend that I have noticed for the past few years. Lots of people walking around but not a lot of players like there used to be. Some of the employees said that the California casinos are impacting them now as the have impacted Reno and Laughlin for a few years. It will be interesting to see what happens now that California will have the largest casinos in the world since propositions 94-97 passed on Super Tuesday. Morongo in Palm Springs and Pechanga in Temecula are expanding to 7500 slot machines each. Agua Caliente is adding a 3rd casino in Palm Springs and will have 5000 machines as will Sycuan in El Cajon. To put it in perspective, the average strip casino has less than 2000 machines.

This trip, we decided to fly rather than drive. We won't do that again. It takes longer to fly and I hate having to adhere to some schedule.

We will continue to go to our local Harrah's Rincon for 3 night stays every month. We love Harrah's Rincon and the machines are better. However, we will probably make a trip or 2 to Las Vegas to stay at the Paris.

My wife plays the slots, a lot and said that they have really tighten down in the midwest and midsouth, the last few months. You can really tell the difference in the parking lots.

She and a friend are going to Las Vegas in April, maybe she will have better luck.

I went to a catered event in a Paris restaurant a few months ago, it was very nice. I think it was Anthony Cools' show afterwards, it was a bit raunchy.

Had free tickets to Jubilee, $20 got the whole party from the next to the back row to a table on the floor center one off the stage. Very nice show, not the Lido, but very nice.
