The Highway 179 Project seems to have moved into Phase 2 beginning on Monday Mar 24....From just above the Village of Oak Creek, near Bell Rock, the stretch of old road from there to the Back o' Beyond will be closed. The new road will be open for traffic.
The traffic will be north and south bound until the old road is reconfigured and repaved ..... sometime in 2009 is probably when it will be open.
The phase near the Y intersection is also beginning utilities work, while the Tlaquepaque area is undergoing preparations for new bridges and a pedestrian bridge.
The traffic circle at the Y will be the final jewel in the crown.
More pullouts and other scenic stops are expected along Hwy 179 when the roadway is completed.
The new visitor center in the Village of Oak Creek will open in early April.
Red Rock passes are still required to park in parking areas of the forest service.
