  • Santa Fe/Carlsbad, NM

We're supposed to be going to Santa Fe in Sept to see my sister and the area. We've never been before and have an exchange into Otra Vez.
I was wondering if Carlsbad, NM is worth the trip as an overnight? I know there are the bats which I would love to see, but is it worth going there just to see them?

Is there anything on the way there or near there that's interesting?

My sister said Roswell is near there, but that still isn't calling my name for a visit.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

That is a long drive, might want to get a timeshare in Ruidoso, NM and do those. From Santa Fe to Wrights City, it is almost 300 miles. I would do Albuquerque, Los Alamos, Taos and southern Colorado.

Also, might consider doing a railroad ride ( Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad )

      Jeri,

Did you see my post about Otra Vez in this thread?

No Bill, I hadn't seen it, so thank you for pointing it out. My sister lives about a mile from there and never knew there was a timeshare there. She thought it was some type of medical building (she knows nothing about timeshares) we were pretty lucky getting a trade there..I deposited my week and got it right away.

I'm looking forward to going there, but I don't think I will be trekking to Carlsbad as it is too far away! 2-3 hours away isn't bad, but not 300+ miles...

Delta just changed my flights (surprise!) so I will be spending a night in Albuquerque at a hotel before I leave.

We are in Santa Fe right now staying at the Otra Vez. We came in on Saturday and left early on Sunday morning for Durango, CO. to do the Durango-Silverton Railroad
On the way up to Duango, we stopped at the Mesa Verde for several hours, did a tour of Ciff PalaceOfficial Website for Mesa Verde National Park and did the loop where we saw many smaller cliff dwellings, along with the Cliff Palace on the opposite side of the canyon. I find it amazing that the Indians built and lived up on those cliffs. They are beautiful.

We stayed in Purgatory that night and drove back into Durango for the train ride up tp Silverton. The views were breathtaking!!

It was a 3.5 hour ride on the way up, we stayed in Silverton for 2 hours and then another 3.5 hours on the way back down.

We were exhausted, so we stayed in Durango last night and drove back today..We stopped for a short hike on the way back, went to the Valle Caldera and Bandolier.

We are going to chill out tomorrow and hang around Santa Fe.
Later during the week, we are going to Taos and an art tour.
