A significant part of Galveston Island is under water, 6 hours before Hurricane Ike is forecast to make landfall. The devastating storm surge will continue to rise tonight on the barrier island and other coastal areas along the central and upper coast of Texas.

Airports near Galveston

Houston airports will be closed to commercial flights today and Saturday as Southern Texas braces for Hurricane Ike, a Category 2 storm that’s already churning up huge waves that are slamming into the Galveston sea wall and the Bolivar Peninsula. The eye of the storm is expected to hit this evening along the Texas Gulf Coast, where mandatory evacuations have been in effect.

History

Naming of The San Luis

Prior to 1783, when Galvez dispatched a ship to explore what is now known as Galveston Bay,
Galveston Island was called San Luis. The origin of the name is shrouded in historical mystery,
though it is known that the Island had been called San Louis, Culebra, Campeche, and San Luis…
before Galvez so honored it with his name.

It is believed that the name San Luis was chosen either by Sieur de la Salle's settlement in Texas or by Luis de Moscoso during a journey along the coast from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Mexico.

While precise historical significance may be lost to antiquity, the name San Luis is very much
a part of Galveston lore. The name was chosen for Galveston's premiere beachfront project to
reflect the adventurous spirit of the early explorers, and to help perpetuate a grain of Island history.

Friday, September 12, 2008 - 10:00 a.m.

Hurricane Ike is expected to make landfall along the Texas coast early Saturday, September 13.
At this time, Wyndham La Cascada and Wyndham Riverside Suites in San Antonio remain open
and are receiving guests; however, we will be suspending new reservations at these resorts through Sunday, September 14, 2008. Hotel Galvez, a Wyndham Historic Hotel in Galveston,
has been closed due to the mandatory evacuation orders.

The San Luis Timeshare is indeed in the same complex as the San Luis Hotel. I once stayed at the T/S, in the smallest timeshare I've ever stayed in. My closet at home is almost that large. It had a sofabed, and you had to put the coffee table up on end to use the bed. H had to put my suitcase by the front door. Tiny. But well located...

San Luis Hotel

The San Luis Hotel was the site of Emergency headquarters during the storm and according to news reports at least one family was evacuated there once their home was unhabitable.
