  • Updates on Sedona Road Construction

The second phase of road construction along Hwy 179 north into Sedona has been moving along.

Two roundabouts, at the intersection of Hwy 179 and 89A are now fully operational...and alert driving is needed. When you drive into Sedona thru Hwy 179, as you cross the Tlaquepaque bridge, signage is there, but might be difficult to interpret. If you are heading into UPTOWN, stay to your right as you approach the roundabout.

Follow the right lane, turn right into Uptown....

This is for anyone who wishes to shop uptown or is staying at the local hotels or timeshares like Arroyo Roble. If you are staying at the Hyatt, you have to continue into the roundabout, to find the entry into the Hyatt.

If you are heading into West Sedona, continue driving the roundabout, circling left....here it gets a bit tricky as there is a second roundabout very shortly (near the Post Office)....follow thru the roundabout heading thru to continue on your way into West Sedona....this is for those of you who might be staying at The Villas of Sedona, Sedona Springs, Wyndham, The Summit...or for those of you who are heading to grocers like Basha's or Safeway.

If you are staying at Los Abrigados near Tlaquepaque, be very alert as there is so much happening in this area, it is easy to overshoot the left turn into Los Abrigados. If you do, just continue up to the roundabout, full circle to make your U-turn, and as you drive back down Hwy 179 you can easily locate the right turn for LA.

There are delays from time to time...depending on the volume of traffic or complexity of the road construction.

Here is the latest news release:

Arizona Department of Transportation SR 179 Improvement Project
    NEWS RELEASE
    Pedestrian Bridge Delivery
SEDONA, Ariz. (Oct 24, 2008) --- The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced today
that the Oak Creek pedestrian bridge is scheduled to be delivered next Wednesday, October 29th.
The bridge will be transported from Coolidge beginning early in the morning, and is scheduled to
arrive at the SR 179 project late in the afternoon. The bridge will travel along I-17 to SR260 and
    then on to SR89A.
When it arrives, the contractor plans to move the bridge into a staging position (on the existing Oak
Creek bridge) in the evening after traffic has dissipated, then lift it and set it into place. During the
setting of the bridge, traffic will be reduced at the location of the bridge to one lane only. Flaggers will
be stationed at either end of the work zone to allow one direction of traffic to pass through at a time.
Between the time the bridge arrives on site and is moved into place, it will be parked on SR89A, most
likely just south of Brewer Rd. This will be done to maintain at least one lane of traffic around the
bridge until they can move it down to the work site.
A weekly construction alert is sent to personal email boxes or fax lines by signing up at
Scenic179.com. For more information call the project hotline at 800-529-2876 or visit the project
    website at Scenic179.com.

Thanks for posting these detailed instructions. I found the flow on 179 to be pretty good when we were there in early Sept.

I didn't find the round-abouts confusing, but we have them here in MA and I've driven in England where they are also frequently found. There were people who were obviously unsure of what to do. I tried to give them as much space as I could.

Thanks so much for your comments here, Sue....it helps to get a variety of people's experiences.

Depending on time of day and volume of traffic, the traffic flow thru these roundabouts can be more or less challenging....and it also depends as you say on people's familiarity with the format.
