  • Speaking of photo radar...

Recently we have had the opportunity to drive along Highway 17 (the north-south main highway, connecting cities in Arizona).....we drove from Flagstaff to Phoenix, and have great news to share (NOT!!!).

Our DPS now have mobile units that they place randomly along the road, to catch any speeders!

So be careful, the enhanced radar traps are not just permanent structures along metro PHX area arteries.....now HWY 17 can hold a nasty surprise for you if you forget to adhere to speed limits.

And as stated in earlier threads, you don't want that ticket.....it will ruin your budget and your trip.

Be careful and alert! And in spite of these nasty attempts to pad the state budget, enjoy Arizona!

Your linked video expresses a universal distaste for the cameras, and showcases an extreme reaction, which is engendered by their presence....while the cameras are intrusive and stir reactions, the video suggests anarchy, rather than pursuing civilized measures to stop the prevalence of camera use.

Sadly, there have been some people who have rashly done things to the cameras, including unfortunately, shooting into a van and killing the operator.

Speed Camera Slay Fuels Debate In Arizona - CBS News

      This occurred in April, 2009.

There are many citizen groups trying to find a lawful opposition to the radar vans and camera stands, but until there is a removal of these mobile and stationery units, all drivers are at risk for being "snapped" if they exceed the speed limit.

I just wanted to alert visitors that Arizona has a high use of photo radar cameras, and that rental car companies will pass that ticket to you... if and when it is sent to them with your photo.

      Forewarned is best.

I only meant it as a bit of fun !

You need to come to the UK to see how we are plagued with speed cameras, of course they have their uses but most appear to be sighted unecessarily and are percieved as no more than revenue producers for the Govt.

"Sadly, there have been some people who have rashly done things to the cameras, including unfortunately, shooting into a van and killing the operator."

Cutting them down or demolishing them with an earth-mover is one thing, but this would NOT occur in the UK

Was it not in the 1967 film "Cool Hand Luke" that Paul Newman cut of parking meters with a pipe-cutter?....nothing new is it ?

Sorry, Bulldog, to have appeared to have missed the humor...I was pretty sure it was a satiric poke at the practice, but having had someone literally die over the controversy, and make Arizona look so bad because of it, has made me a bit thin skinned.

Yes, there have been such attempts to disarm the units, from pasting silly string all over them, to chopping them down....all unsuccessful, as they are quickly repaired and even guarded...also the photos snap if someone is near them, from what I understand...so you are quickly found out.

Isn't it awful that the best our legislators can do is to figure out how to use technology in an effort to produce revenue, under the guise of the protection of the public good?

I think the UK has been the forerunner of camera use in more than speeding, if I understand correctly, so I know that you are very much more familiar with this techology.

I understand that in London, at least, there are so many cameras on many street corners and they have pretty much invaded the public space.

And now, the US is installing them everywhere, on corners, in stores, parks, etc. There is no place where you might not be recorded, it is unnerving.

Is this truly for the public good? It would seem to have a double edge....while the public wants their safety protected, it is also a great invasion of freedoms.....

But for further discussion of this topic, we should probably move to the Political forum....

I apologize if I seemed offended by your post....it wasn't that....it is that we are pushed to our limits at times, all in the name of public good, or because our civilized society is being dogged to lose its civility. The poor man who lost his life while manning that radar station never anticipated such an end, I am sure.

I got hit with $400 worth of tickets in the last 2 months. My son got caught at a light camera. BTW he told me the night he got it. Any place you travel when the light changes from green to yellow to red there is a few seconds pause between light changes but not here. They are out to get you here in NY My wife got a ticket for being to close to the fire hydrant. She took a picture and you could tell from the cement squares in the pic that she was about 12 feet away. The law is 15 feet no break there. I got one for no standing but I was in the car. The cop wrote black as my color car and I have a silver/Grey color. I tried hearing by mail and lost. I also just got one for inspection. This one took me for a loop. I had just brought my wifes car for inspection the week before. I forgot to look at my own car which is the car that got the ticket. I was guilty on that one.

That hurts! Sadly, thruout the land, these are the current ways that states are trying to pad their budgets.

Out of state vistors to AZ can pretty much toss the ticket in the trash.
AZ law requires the ticket be hand delivered to be valid. When a AZ Resident doesn't respond to the mailed tickets they send a process server to hand deliver it. This costs us a extra $25 if they have to send the server out.
The other interesting thing is a car registered to a business can't be served.
They mail the tickets but the business is not legally required to respond.
I know a business owner in Phoenix that has his and his wifes personel cars registered to the business and they get mailed tickets all the time that they ignore.
Some rental car companies are supplying the renters name and address to the state but if you live out of state and they mail you the ticket you can just toss it in the trash.
They are not serving out of state drivers or cars registered out of state at this time.

How are other states handling this?

                      Don't know.

I thought however, in my neck of the woods there was some co-operation among the States in reporting to each other's data bases. Which the insurance companies and RMVs have access to.

Hard to imagine I could cross the nearest State line and rack up speeding tickets with no consequences.

If your pulled over by a Law inforcement officer for speeding in Arizona you would get a ticket. The issue I speak of is with Camera tickets where they mail you a ticket.
You can read this article for all the details.

In my defense, I'm not completely stupid. Just may appear that at some times.

However, the AZ State officials probably should not rely on that as a defense.

Still hard to believe however there is not some reporting to other States, are offenses other than those captured by camera reported to other States.

Its only the Camera tickets that don't get reported to MVD because of the way the law allowing them was setup.
What they mail you is suppose to look like a real ticket but legally its just a notice of suspected violation. You are under no legal obligation to respond to it in Arizona. If you do however respond to the notice you have accpeted it. If you don't respond and ignore it They must hand deliver the ticket to you under Arizona law for it to be binding. They will send out a process server to do this and add a extra $25 fee if they can catch you at home.
most people just give up their rights and pay the fine when the notice comes in the mail and thats what they count on.

Here is a message board with alot of information about the camera tickets.
