in 1886, a photographer named H H Bennett invented the stop action shutter and it took him 17 tries to catch his son jumping from the main land to Stand Rock. This picture became famous, was on the cover of Look or Life magazine, and started the tourist industry in the dells. in those days, you paid for the boat ride and were handed an oar and you paddled to this site.
now, the Upper Dells boat trip includes a stop at this site, when everyone is gathered, the dog jumps to Stand Rock, and back and everyone tries to snap the picture at just the right moment. For some reason, when the dog was finished, the trainer jumped, and my husband caught him jumping back. it took H H Bennett 17 tries, hubby did it in one. If you look closely, you will see the dog in the picture too. I wish i knew how to enlarge it.
By the way, it was 39 degrees when we boarded the tour boat.
