I clicked on this feature but don't know what it is supposed to do? I tried to single out a post which could be done by clicking on the post #. How do I do this today and please explain what perma linking is and what it is for. TIA.

You are asking the impossible...
The site is running a new script that rewrites our URLS. It does this to make the site easier for search engines and hence visitors to find their way around the website.
The "permalink" for the post number should be the same thing you are used to but it just has a new name. The new software is fairly complicated and it has the capability to do more then I am using it for so far.
Hope this helps some but the honest answer is that I have not had the time to really work with this a whole lot yet myself!
