The validation message refers to "Join the public group"... Should it say "private group"?

As far I know it is a public group that is private until you join. In other words members can see the group in the group listings but can not see the posts inside unless they join.

Frank is correct... Public in this sense means that members can join as opposed to other groups that members cant join (Say Moderator Group as an example).

I can't change that as it is a phrase that is used everywhere... in the furture I want to use those group settings to allow more options for how people see the site and those options would not be "private"...

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think there is much I can do about this at this time...
