  • Baby Think It Over

My son brought home "the baby" for the weekend; it is a simulated baby doll and taking care of it is part of the health grade for all seniors. It turned on at 3:00 this afternoon, cried pretty much non-stop (though several feedings and diaper changes and rocks and burps) until 4:00 and is now finally quiet. If you don't do the right thing, the cries get louder and more high pitched. I'm afraid we're all going to be up all night!

Apparently the old babies had a key you would turn when it started crying. This baby is more sophisticated, and has real diapers that must be changed (the diapers have sensors on them, so it knows if you have put back on the same diaper), a real bottle, and needs to actually be rocked, burped, etc. My son has a bracelet on that can't be removed; it has a sensor in it which needs to be scanned against the baby whenever it starts crying, so that he can't hand the baby off to anyone else.

Anyone's kids had to do this, and if so, any tips?

P.S. My thread title is actually the name of the program, which I think is pretty cute.

One of mine had an egg back in middle school. It didn't last the day.
Good luck. Seems to me a wonderful deterent!

My dds didn't have this, but my hairdresser's dd did. Some of her stories were hysterical. I guess the "babies" are pretty realistic looking. One day she (my hairdresser) was walking with her dd, son and the "baby". She overheard some women making comments about that young girl with the baby, and the comments weren't all that nice. My hairdresser is not one to take anything like that being said about her kids. So, she confronted the women. Another night they all went out to dinner to a Japanese restaurant (baby included). The waitress first thought it was a real baby, and when she found out it wasn't was so entranced she kept coming back over to look, and bringing other staff. My hairdresser said it was pretty hard for them to eat dinner with all the attention.

One of the component of the program was something about keeping the baby's head stable. If the student didn't it was an automatic failure. So, some other students thought it was very funny to try and grab the baby, swing it around and get the head to "snap". Kids!

P.S. Does anyone remember the "Frasier" episode where Niles was carrying around a 5 lb sack of flour in preparation for being a dad. I still get tears in my eyes from laughing so hard at that one.

I'm a HS Health teacher and for our project the students have to research the costs associated with raising a child in its first year. They must also come up with a realistic solution for doing this with only a high school diploma and minimal help from their parents. It's a real eye opener for them!

They used to do the egg thing or some sort of "flour baby" but most of the kids didn't take it too seriously while others were just interested in playing house. The baby that you are talking about seems as realistic as possible. I'd have to guess that it's pretty expensive, too.

Also, my wife works in the child care room at our local gym and she had a HS student come in with one of those computerized babies. He had to leave the baby with her and when it cried he had to stop his workout and take care of it. My wife said that he was getting pretty annoyed with it. Hopefully he'll think twice before having sex now.

My bff's dd is a high school senior this year. I'm not sure what class it is she's taking, but it sounds like some kind of Life Skills thing. One of their projects was to pick a profession, interview someone currently in it, find out starting salary, and then make a buget. She had to find out what rents where in the city where she'd be living, plus all of her other living expenses. Imagine her surprise when she found out her largest "expense" was taxes. This sounds like a project all students should be required to do.

We have those babies at the school where I am a nurse. You can't believe how many kids come in exhausted because they were up at night with the "baby"! I believe it is a good lesson, but then again I remember that kids are impulsive, so I don't think it will be a real deterrent to adolescent sex.

OK Seinfeld fans. Today we were going over anatomy. Can you guess what body part? Here's your hint: It's a female part and it rhymes with a woman's name.
